01/18/2015 MLB Note - Milwaukee Brewers Gallardo, Yovani
RHP Yovani Gallardo likely will pitch his final year before free
agency as a Ranger. Fox Sports and ESPN reported Jan. 18 that the
Brewers were on the verge of trading the veteran to Texas. Details
of the deal were not known. Gallardo, 28, will make $13 million in
the final year of his contract in 2015 after the Brewers picked up
his option in November. The option was part of a five-year, $30
million contract he signed in 2010. ESPN cited a source who said
that the Fort Worth, Texas, high school product would be open to
re-signing with the Rangers before becoming a free agent.
Last season, Gallardo went 8-11 with a career-best 3.51 ERA in 192
1/3 innings and 32 starts. Over eight major league seasons, all with
Milwaukee, Gallardo has an 89-64 record with a 3.69 ERA in 214 games
(211 starts).

MLB Note - New York Yankees Perez, Eury
OF Eury Perez was designated for assignment by the Yankees on Jan.
16 to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for newly re-signed INF
Stephen Drew. Perez, 24, went 2-for-10 with no RBIs and one stolen
base in four games for New York last season. He hit .311/.372/.409
with two homers, 15 RBIs and 26 stolen bases in 57 games for
Triple-A Syracuse before he was claimed off waivers by the Yankees
from the Nationals in September.

MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Kawasaki, Munenori
INF Munenori Kawasaki, outrighted off the Blue Jays' 40-man roster
on Oct. 1, re-signed with the Toronto organization on Jan. 16. He
received a minor league deal and was invited to spring training.
Kawasaki, 33, hit .258/.327/.296 with no homers and 17 RBIs in 82
games for Toronto last year.

Diamondbacks Lopez, Yoan
RHP Yoan Lopez finalized a minor league contract with the
Diamondbacks on Jan. 16, getting an $8.27 million signing bonus that
is a record for an international free agent under 23 years old.
Lopez was pursued heavily. The Dodgers, Yankees and Padres made
offers to the 21-year-old, who is likely to be invited to spring
training with the Diamondbacks. Lopez, who spent three seasons in
Cuba's top pro league, showed off a 95 mph fastball in workouts for
teams in November. Major League Baseball confirmed his free agency
status before the workout.

MLB Note - No MLB Team Free Agents Scherzer, Max
RHP Max Scherzer is close to signing with the Nationals, according
to The Washington Post. Nationals beat writer Adam Kilgore tweeted
Sunday, "Per a source, Max Scherzer to the Nats is 'very close.' Not
finished yet."
Multiple sources are reporting that other teams are still in the
running for the 30-year-old Scherzer, who was 18-5 with a 3.15 ERA
and 252 strikeouts in 220 1/3 innings for the Detroit Tigers last
season after winning the 2013 American League Cy Young Award. For
his career, Scherzer is 91-50 with a 3.58 ERA in two seasons with
the Arizona Diamondbacks and the last five with the Tigers. He made
the All-Star team in each of the past two seasons. Scherzer rejected
a six-year, $144 million offer from the Tigers last spring and is
reportedly set to sign on for seven years within days.

MLB Note - Chicago Cubs Bard, Daniel
RHP Daniel Bard agreed to a one-year, minor league contract with the
Cubs on Jan. 18 and received an invitation to spring training. If
Bard makes the major league club, his base salary reportedly would
be $1 million plus incentives based on appearances. He would likely
be used as a reliever. Bard, 29, pitched in 211 games with the Red
Sox from 2009-13, posting a 3.67 ERA over 257 1/3 innings. Because
of an arm injury, he made just four appearances with the Rangers'
Class A Hickory team last year before he was released.

MLB Note - San Francisco Giants Blanco, Gregor
OF Gregor Blanco and the Giants avoided arbitration by agreeing to a
two-year, $7.5 million contract on Jan. 18. When the sides exchanged
salary requests two days earlier, Blanco was offered $3.3 million
for 2015 by the team, while he countered with a $4 million figure.
Blanco, 31, hit .260/.333/.374 with five home runs, 38 RBIs and 16
stolen bases in 146 games last year.
