Marlins 5, Giants 4

Jose Fernandez, returning to the mound for the first time in nearly 14 months, homered and pitched six innings, to lead the Miami Marlins to a 5-4 win over the San Francisco Giants.

Right-hander Jake Arrieta threw eight strong innings and third baseman Jonathan Herrera hit a two-run homer and finished with three RBIs as the Chicago Cubs completed a three-game sweep of the New York Mets.

The Cubs (42-35) won all seven games this season against the Mets, the first time Chicago has swept New York in a season.

The Mets (40-40) scored just one run in 29 innings in being swept at home for the first time since Aug. 12-14, 2014, by the Washington Nationals. New York has scored two runs or fewer in 12 of its last 14 games.

Padres 5, Cardinals 3 (11 innings)

Pinch hitter Will Venable crushed a two-run homer in the 11th inning to give the San Diego Padres victory over the St Louis Cardinals.

Venable then jumped on the first pitch from Carlos Villanueva (3-3) for his sixth homer of the season as San Diego (38-43) started a 10-game road trip by handing St Louis a third straight loss.

Pirates 8, Tigers 4
