[July 06, 2015]  July 5 (Reuters) - Highlights of Sunday's Major League Baseball games:

Pirates 5, Indians 3

Gerrit Cole settled down after a shaky start to notch his major-league-high 12th win as the Pittsburgh Pirates came from behind to beat the Cleveland Indians 5-3.

Cole (12-3) found his range to set down 16 consecutive batters after the Indians took an early 3-0 lead.

The right-hander allowed three runs and five hits in eight innings with five strikeouts and one walk. He was winless in his previous two starts.

Mets 8, Dodgers 0

Left-hander Steven Matz and right-hander Logan Verrett combined for a three-hit shutout to lead the New York Mets to a rout of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Matz (2-0) retired 15 of the final 17 Dodgers he faced in his second major league start. In six innings, the rookie scattered two walks, hit one batter and amassed eight strikeouts.

Red Sox 5, Astros 4

The Boston Red Sox continued their march back to respectability when designated hitter Hanley Ramirez one-handed a two-run homer over the Green Monster off left-hander Tony Sipp to beat the Houston Astros.

The last-place Red Sox (39-45) earned their 11th win in their last 17 games and closed their American League East deficit to six games. The victory also wrapped up their third straight series win.

Mariners 2, Athletics 1

Seattle pitcher Mike Montgomery allowed a run for the first time in nearly three weeks but still managed to win his third consecutive start as the Mariners downed the Oakland Athletics to salvage a series split.

Montgomery's scoreless run ended at 20 innings. It is the second longest scoreless streak by a Mariners rookie, behind only Mark Langston's 21 innings in 1984.

Nationals 3, Giants 1

Jordan Zimmermann went seven strong innings and Wilson Ramos connected for a home run as the Washington Nationals completed a three-game sweep of the San Francisco Giants.

The Giants went 0-6 on a road swing through Miami and Washington. They lost their seventh consecutive road game, and have just three wins in their past 12 away games.

Rays 8, Yankees 1

Erasmo Ramirez and two relievers combined on a three-hitter as the Tampa Bay Rays ended a season-high seven-game losing streak with a rout of the New York Yankees.

Ramirez (7-3) went the first six innings, allowing designated hitter Alex Rodriguez's solo home run in the sixth among three hits. He improved to 7-2 in 10 starts since May 14.

Angels 12, Rangers 6

Right fielder Kole Calhoun had four RBIs as Los Angeles finished off a three-game sweep of the Texas Rangers with another emphatic victory.

The Angels entered the series with a minus-two run differential but left Texas at plus-23 after outscoring the Rangers 33-8.

Brewers 6, Reds 1

Gerardo Parra and Adam Lind homered and the surging Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cincinnati Reds for their eighth consecutive victory, their longest winning streak since April 2014.

Rookie Taylor Jungmann retired the first 12 batters he faced en route to seven shutout innings as the Brewers improved to 36-48.

Blue Jays 10, Tigers 5

Right fielder Jose Bautista and first baseman Justin Smoak homered during a six-run fifth inning and the Toronto Blue Jays halted a three-game losing streak with a win over the Detroit Tigers.

Second baseman Devon Travis drove in three runs and third baseman Josh Donaldson knocked in two more for the Blue Jays (43-41), who have scored a major league leading 460 runs.

Cardinals 3, Padres 1

A day after recording his first major league hit, run and steal, Tommy Pham was at it again, belting his first home run, driving in all three runs and leading St Louis to victory over the San Diego Padres.

Royals 3, Twins 2

Eric Hosmer's walk off run-scoring double in the ninth scored Lorenzo Cain as the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins.

Twins right-hander Ervin Santana was impressive in his first start of the season, but had to settle for a no-decision.

Santana, who was suspended the first 80 games after testing positive for a performance enhancing drug, held the Royals to three hits and two runs over eight innings.

Phillies 4, Braves 0 (10 innings)

First baseman Ryan Howard's sacrifice fly in the 10th inning broke a scoreless tie and lifted the Philadelphia Phillies to victory over the Atlanta Braves, snapping their six-game losing streak.

Orioles 9, White Sox 1

The Baltimore Orioles broke out of an offensive funk with 15 hits and avoided a sweep by beating the Chicago White Sox.

The Orioles snapped a three-game losing streak and ended a four-game White Sox winning streak.

Cubs 2, Marlins 0

Right-hander Kyle Hendricks scattered five hits through 7 1/3 shutout innings for his second straight win as the Chicago Cubs blanked the Miami Marlins.

Rockies 6, Diamondbacks 4

Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a three-run homer in the first inning as the Rockies salvaged the final game of a four-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. (Compiled by Andrew Both)
