Medicare Assistance available at Oasis Senior Center

[April 6, 2015]   Medicare assistance is available at the Oasis Senior Center, 2810 Woodlawn Road, Lincoln, IL from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Thursdays.  Appointments are needed.  Please call the Oasis Senior Center at     (217) 732-6132 to make your counseling appointment.  The counselor is State Certified and able to assist you with your Medicare insurance questions.

IDoA seeks nominations for Senior Hall of Fame
Nomination deadline is August 25; Winners announced later this year

he Illinois Department on Aging (IDoA) is seeking nominations for the 2015 Illinois Senior Hall of Fame awards. The annual award, established in 1994 by the General Assembly, recognizes residents of the state, ages 65 and older who excel in the categories of Community Service, Education, Performance and/or Graphic Arts, and Labor Force. Since its start, 95 people have been inducted into the Senior Hall of Fame.   (Click here to continue reading)

Part one: Common and costly telephone scams   

Detective Mark Landers on Friday morning was the primary speaker at a meeting held at the Oasis Senior Center addressing how to avoid being the victim of scammers. Landers spoke along with Nancy Kauggold of Senior Services of Central Illinois and Logan County State’s Attorney Jonathan Wright.

Landers offered up information about scams that are going on in the community either by telephone, internet, mail or in person such as the home repair frauds.  (Click here to continue reading)

Part two: Internet viruses and hackers, mail fraud, and home repair scams

Friday morning, Detective Mark Landers of the Logan County Sherriff’s Office led a meeting at the Oasis Senior Center on how to avoid being scammed. The meeting covered several topics and included not only information shared by Landers, but also from Senior Services of Central Illinois and Logan County State’s Attorney Jonathan Wright.

After discussing scams involving telemarketers, and con artists who will impersonate government officials and even family members in order to get money, Landers moved on to internet scams. Sixty percent of the population over the age of 60 uses the internet and of those 70-plus percent are on the internet daily.  (Click here to continue reading)

The Christian Village kicks off expansion campaign

On the heels of its 50th anniversary, The Christian Village is launching the Vision 2015 Capital Campaign to carry its ministry into the future. The senior living community will be expanding to provide older adults options they’ve never had in Logan County.
