Popovich to coach NBA team in Africa

[July 17, 2015]  Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs will coach Team Africa and Luol Deng will be its captain for the the NBA's first game in Africa next month.

Team Africa will face Team World, coached by Lionel Hollins of the Brooklyn Nets, on Aug. 1 in Johannesburg, South Africa, the league announced Thursday.

Joining the Miami Heat's Deng on the roster for Team Africa, composed of players born in Africa or of African descent, will be Al-Farouq Aminu of the Portland Trail Blazers, Nicolas Batum of the Charlotte Hornets, Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks, Bismack Biyombo of the Toronto Raptors, Boris Diaw of the Spurs, Gorgui Dieng of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Festus Ezeli of the Golden State Warriors, Serge Ibaka of the Oklahoma City Thunder and free-agent Luc Mbah a Moute.

Popovich's assistants will be Atlanta Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer, a former Spurs assistant, and Thunder assistant Monty Williams.

Brothers Pau Gasol of the Chicago Bulls and Marc Gasol of the Memphis Grizzlies are part of the Team World roster along with captain Chris Paul of the Los Angeles Clippers Jeff Green of the Grizzlies, Bradley Beal of the Washington Wizards, Kenneth Faried of the Denver Nuggets, Marcus Smart and Evan Turner of the Boston Celtics and Nikola Vucevic of the Orlando Magic.

Hollins will be assisted by Celtics coach Brad Stevens.

The NBA has seen more than 35 Africans play in the league since 1984.
