The Padres trailed 7-1 in the seventh when Derek Norris hit a grand
slam. The Mets still led 7-5 entering the ninth when Jeurys Familia
retired the first two batters on just three pitches. Familia then
got ahead of Norris 0-1 before heavy rains arrived and umpires waved
the teams off the field.
Forty-four minutes later, play resumed and Familia promptly got a
swinging strike on Norris. Norris fouled off the next three pitches
before he blooped a single into right field for his fifth hit in as
many at-bats.
Matt Kemp followed with another single. Heavy rain again began
falling as Upton hit the first pitch he saw from Familia (2-1)
beyond the center field wall for his 18th homer of the season.
Nationals 1, Marlins 0
MIAMI -- Ryan Zimmerman hit a solo home run, and Max Scherzer
pitched seven scoreless innings, leading Washington past Miami.
Jonathan Papelbon pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his first
save since joining the Nationals. He was acquired from the
Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday.
Scherzer (11-8) allowed three hits -- all singles -- and three walks
while striking out six and lowering his ERA to 2.22.
Blue Jays 5, Royals 2
TORONTO -- Dioner Navarro hit a two-run homer, Marco Estrada pitched
into the sixth inning, and Toronto defeated Kansas City.
Navarro gave Toronto the lead for good with his second-inning home
run. Russell Martin and Josh Donaldson added solo shots as the Blue
Jays celebrated the acquisition of David Price in a trade earlier in
the day.
The Royals' only two runs against Estrada (8-6) came in the first
inning. The right-hander allowed three hits, walked none and struck
out three in 5 2/3 innings.
Phillies 4, Braves 1
PHILADELPHIA -- Aaron Harang ended a personal eight-game losing
streak in his return from the disabled list, and Philadelphia beat
Atlanta.
Right fielder Domonic Brown hit his first homer of the season for
Philadelphia, which is 10-2 since the All-Star break. Atlanta lost
for the seventh time in eight games.
Harang, out since July 1 with plantar fasciitis of the left foot,
went five innings and allowed one run and nine hits while striking
out three and walking one. Ken Giles, the last of five Philadelphia
pitchers, worked the ninth for his second save.
Red Sox 8, White Sox 2
BOSTON -- Steven Wright gave up two runs in seven innings, struck
out a career-high eight and outdueled Chris Sale as Boston avoided a
four-game sweep with a win over Chicago.
Wright (4-4) allowed six hits and two walks while throwing a
season-high 116 pitches in Boston's third win in 14 games since the
All-Star break. Chicago had its winning streak snapped at a
season-high seven games.
David Ortiz had three hits and drove in two runs, and Xander
Bogaerts added three singles and a sacrifice fly for the Red Sox.
Tigers 9, Orioles 8
BALTIMORE -- Yoenis Cespedes hit a two-run homer to lead a 16-hit
Detroit attack, and the Tigers held off a late rally and snapped
Baltimore's five-game winning streak.
Cespedes finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs. Ian
Kinsler and Jose Iglesias also went 3-for-5.
J.D. Martinez hit two doubles and drove in three runs, and center
fielder Rajai Davis added a two-run triple as the Tigers raced to a
7-0 lead in the fourth inning before holding on in the end.
Reds 15, Pirates 5
CINCINNATI -- Brandon Phillips hit a pair of three-run home runs and
had a career-high seven RBIs, and Marlon Byrd added a three-run shot
as Cincinnati pounded Pittsburgh.
Pedro Alvarez homered for Pittsburgh, which remained winless in four
games at Great American Ball Park this season while dropping to 2-8
overall against the Reds. Cincinnati won its third in a row thanks
in part to three hits from Joey Votto.
Right-hander David Holmberg (1-0) got the win after being recalled
from Triple-A Louisville to take Johnny Cueto's spot in the
rotation. Holmberg allowed two runs and five hits in six innings.
Cubs 5, Brewers 2
MILWAUKEE -- Anthony Rizzo's three-run homer in the eighth inning
powered Chicago to a victory over Milwaukee.
[to top of second column] |
Rizzo accounted for the only two hits allowed by Brewers
right-hander Jimmy Nelson, who struck out eight in seven shutout
innings. But Milwaukee's bullpen couldn't protect a 2-0 lead in the
eighth.
Addison Russell and Dexter Fowler opened the inning with singles
against Jeremy Jeffress. Will Smith (4-2) entered to face a trio of
left-handed batters. He struck out Kyle Schwarber but missed his
mark on a 94 mph fastball to Rizzo, who slammed it to right-center
field for his 18th homer of the year.
Astros 3, Angels 0
HOUSTON -- Jason Castro slugged a walk-off home run with two outs in
the ninth inning, and Houston completed a three-game sweep of Los
Angeles.
Castro was batting .111 (6-for-54) with runners in scoring position
before crushing a 1-2 fastball from Fernando Salas (2-2) out to
right field, scoring both Jed Lowrie and Marwin Gonzalez.
The blast marked the second career walk-off homer for Castro, who
helped lift Houston to a two-game lead over the Angels in the
American League West.
Twins 9, Mariners 5
MINNEAPOLIS -- Phil Hughes allowed five runs on 10 hits over five
innings but got the win anyway, thanks to three-hit nights from
Eddie Rosario and Aaron Hicks. The Twins snapped a four-game losing
streak.
Rosario finished a single short of the cycle, and he nearly got it,
lining out sharply in each of his final two at-bats of the evening.
Rosario's three-run homer in the first gave the Twins an early lead
they wouldn't relinquish.
Rangers 7, Yankees 6
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Josh Hamilton's two-out, run-scoring single in
the bottom of the ninth lifted Texas past New York.
The Rangers split the four-game series against the American League
East leaders on Hamilton's second walk-off hit of the season and
ninth of his career. Hamilton hit a three-run homer in the first
inning.
The Yankees led on three different occasions and couldn't take
advantage of first baseman Mark Teixeira's two home runs, including
a two-out solo blast to center in the seventh that gave New York a
6-5 lead.
Cardinals 9, Rockies 8
ST. LOUIS -- Greg Garcia's bases-loaded walk with one out in the
bottom of the ninth capped a three-run outburst that gave St. Louis
a win over Colorado.
Matt Carpenter started the rally with his fourth hit, a ground-rule
double to right-center. Rockies closer John Axford (3-5) entered,
but he walked Randal Grichuk and allowed a single to Kolten Wong,
filling the bases.
Jhonny Peralta laced a two-run single to center to even the score at
8. After an intentional walk to Jason Heyward, Yadier Molina flied
out, but Garcia watched a 3-1 pitch sail high to seal the verdict.
Indians 3, Athletics 1
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Carlos Carrasco pitched his fifth career complete
game, and Carlos Santana hit a two-run homer, leading Cleveland
Indians to a victory over Oakland.
Carrasco (11-8) allowed just two hits, matching his career best for
a complete game. He struck out seven, raising his season total to
140, and walked one.
Michael Brantley hit a first-inning double that produced a
run-scoring error by A's left fielder Sam Fuld, and Brantley scored
on Santana's homer. That was the only damage Cleveland did against
Chris Bassitt (0-4), who threw seven innings of six-hit ball.
