[June 05, 2015]  June 4 (The Sports Xchange) - The NHL/NHL Players Association Competition Committee met Thursday and recommended a limited coach's challenge on scoring plays.

The committee also discussed changing the overtime format, but no decisions were made. General managers had recommended in March altering four-on-four play in OT to three-on-three, to promote scoring and reduce the number of shootouts.

"There was considerable discussion of changing the current overtime format, but no consensus was reached," the NHL and NHLPA said in a statement.

"The NHLPA and NHL will continue discussions in the coming weeks on potential changes with the intention for the committee to make a decision on overtime later this month. There will be no changes to the shootout format."

On the coach's challenge, the NHL and NHLPA said a coach will be allowed to ask for a review of a goal that might have been scored from goaltender interference or an offside play. The coach must have a timeout available to call for a challenge.

The committee also made a recommendation to change the faceoff rule to require the player from the defensive zone team to put his stick on the ice first, with the hope that more goals will be scored because its gives the offensive player an advantage.

The Toronto Maple Leafs signed Swedish forward Andreas Johnson to a three-year, entry-level contract and re-signed defenseman T.J. Brennan to a one-year deal.

The 20-year-old Johnson spent the 2014-15 season with Frolunda in the Swedish Hockey League and totaled 22 goals and 13 assists in 55 regular-season games, and two goals and two assists in eight playoff games.

The Ottawa Senators and coach Dave Cameron have agreed to a new two-year contract, general manager Bryan Murray said.

The deal upgrades Cameron's existing contract, which also ran for two more years, according to NHL.com.

Cameron had been an assistant on Paul MacLean's staff since 2011, and took over when the team fired McLean on Dec. 8.

Cameron rallied the Senators to a 32-15-8 finish in which they overcame a 14-point deficit in the standings and earned a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. They lost 4-2 to the Montreal Canadiens in the first round. (Editing by Larry Fine) ))
