Volunteers play a critical role at Abraham Lincoln Memorial
Hospital. Over 21,000 hours of service was provided to ALMH from
October 1, 2013 to September 30, 2015. During that time, volunteers
also answered 47,000 calls at the information desk and assisted with
over 19,000 patient inquiries and services.
“The hospital simply could not operate without the help of our
volunteers,” said Dolan Dalpoas, ALMH President and CEO, as he
addressed the attendees. “We value you. We know that the services we
provide our patients are improved greatly by your commitment to
helping us provide excellent patient care.”
Several volunteers were recognized for their years of service but
one volunteer, Shirley Dittus, was the highlight of the recognitions
with 60 years of volunteerism to ALMH. Throughout the years Dittus,
of Lincoln, has served the hospital in a variety of capacities. Her
work has also extended to the state level as part of the
Coordinating Council of Volunteers.
“I’m not sure how this is possible, “said Dittus. “I’m not even 60
years old.” She said to an amused and admiring audience that
included fellow volunteers and Dittus family members including her
brother, son, and daughter who were present for the presentation.

Volunteers at ALMH work either occasionally or several hours each week
completing things like staffing the front information desk, assisting
departments or helping with special projects. Additionally, volunteers operate
the Pink Shutter Thrift Shop located at 114 North McLean Street in Lincoln where
proceeds benefit the hospital. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact
Lynne Metz at 217-732-2161 ext. 55700 or visit ALMH.org.
