[June 18, 2015]  June 17 (The Sports Xchange) - St. Louis Cardinals CEO William O. DeWitt Jr. and general manager John Mozeliak said Wednesday the team is assisting the federal investigation into a possible breach of the Houston Astros' database and that any Cardinals employee found to be involved "will be held accountable."

The FBI and Justice Department reportedly are investigating Cardinals officials.

"These are serious allegations that don't reflect who we are as an organization," DeWitt said in a statement Wednesday.

"We are committed to getting to the bottom of this matter as soon as possible; and, if anyone within our organization is determined to be involved in anything inappropriate, they will be held accountable."

DeWitt said the team is providing requested information to the federal government and had begun an internal inquiry to attempt to identify any employee who may have engaged in the alleged conduct.

St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright, who underwent surgery to repair a torn left Achilles tendon on April 30, is hoping to return at the end of the season.

Wainwright's recovery time originally was estimated to be 9-12 months, and he was not expected to be back until spring training in 2016.

The pitching ace no longer needs crutches to get around after two months of rehab. Now just in a walking boot, Wainwright, 33, began working on his upper body this week.

Washington Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg, on the disabled list since May 30, gave up four hits and one earned run in five innings Wednesday in his first rehab start for Double-A Harrisburg.

Strasburg threw 50 of 71 pitches for strikes against Richmond. He struck out six and walked none.

Strasburg, 26, has been out with a strained left trapezius. He was 3-5 with a 6.55 ERA in 10 starts before going on the DL.

The Philadelphia Phillies placed right-hander Jerome Williams on the 15-day disabled list and recalled right-hander Hector Neris from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Williams (3-7, 6.43 ERA) strained his left hamstring while trying to cover home plate in the first inning Tuesday during the Phillies' 19-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

Neris was 1-3 with a 3.60 ERA at Lehigh Valley and pitched 2 2/3 innings with the Phillies earlier this season.

The New York Yankees optioned right-hander Jose Ramirez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and recalled left-hander Jose De Paula.

Ramirez, 25, had been called up Saturday for his second stint with New York this season. He had allowed five runs in three innings over three appearances.

De Paula, 27, began the season on the disabled list with a shoulder injury. Activated to the Triple-A roster on June 2, he went 2-0 with a 1.53 ERA in three starts (17 2/3 innings) with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The Atlanta Braves demoted right-hander Mike Foltynewicz to Triple-A Gwinnett and recalled infielder Daniel Castro.

The 23-year-old Foltynewicz, acquired in January in the deal that sent Evan Gattis to the Houston Astros, had surrendered 16 runs in 16 innings in June, and his ERA had ballooned to 5.19 after nine starts.

Castro, 22, was hitting .286 at Gwinnett.

The Colorado Rockies signed Florida high school shortstop Brendan Rodgers, the No. 3 overall selection in the 2015 draft, to a contract on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old Rodgers received $5.5 million, which is less than the recommended slot bonus of $6.3 million for the third pick in the draft, according to MLB.com.

Shortstops Dansby Swanson of Vanderbilt and Alex Bregman of LSU were selected 1-2 in the draft ahead of Rodgers but have yet to sign. (Editing by Larry Fine) ))
