Nova, who had Tommy John surgery in April 2014, pitched effectively
into the seventh inning as the Yankees rolled to a 10-2 win over the
Philadelphia Phillies. Nova (1-0) allowed no runs and three hits in
6 2/3 innings.

The Seattle Mariners called up veteran outfielder Franklin Gutierrez
from Triple-A Tacoma and sent down outfielder James Jones.
Gutierrez, 32, was set to start in left field against the Kansas
City Royals and hit second in the lineup in his first game since
Sept. 27, 2013.

The Pittsburgh Pirates promoted right-hander Chris Volstad from
Triple-A Indianapolis and placed utility player Corey Hart on the
15-day disabled list.
Volstad, 28, returns to the majors for the first time since 2013,
when he put up a 10.80 ERA in six games with the Colorado Rockies.

The Texas Rangers recalled outfielder Michael Choice from Triple-A
Round Rock and demoted left-hander Alex Claudio.
Choice was hitting .242 for Round Rock, although he was batting .400
with 10 RBIs in his last 11 games.

Two minor-league pitchers were suspended for violations of the drug
prevention and treatment program.
Derrick Bernard, a right-hander in the New York Mets' organization,
and Christopher R. Perez, a free agent, were suspended for 50 games
without pay for a second positive test of a drug of abuse.
