NEW YORK -- Goaltender Cam Talbot stopped 25 shots as the New York Rangers emerged with a 4-1 victory against the Nashville Predators at Madison Square Garden on Monday night.

Right winger Rick Nash, defenseman Marc Staal, left winger Chris Kreider and center Dominic Moore scored for the Rangers, who are 9-1-1 in their past 11 games. Right winger Mats Zuccarello had two assists.

The Rangers moved into first place in the Metropolitan with 84 points, tied with the New York Islanders, who lose the head-to-head tiebreaker by having played two more games.

Left winger Matt Cullen scored for the Predators, who have lost three straight for the first time this season. Goaltender Pekka Rinne made 36 saves. Nashville still holds the league's best record despite its recent 2-4-1 slide.

Blackhawks 5, Hurricanes 2

CHICAGO -- Center Jonathan Toews scored twice, leading the Blackhawks to a win over the Hurricanes. It was Toews' third two-goal performance of the season, a big plus with team scoring leader Patrick Kane out for the next 10 to 12 weeks after surgery on a broken left clavicle.

Chicago snapped a skid that reached four losses in six games. Carolina saw its three-game winning streak end.

Chicago goalie Corey Crawford, who lost three of his previous four starts, stopped all but two of Carolina's 29 shots.

Sharks 4, Canadiens 0

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Newcomer Ben Smith scored a goal and added an assist to help the Sharks earn their first win at SAP Center in nine attempts. He was acquired in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks earlier in the day.

Backup goalie Alex Stalock posted his second shutout of the season and fourth of his career with 20 saves. Defenseman Brent Burns had an assist on Stalock's shutout. He batted a diving shot by center David Desharnais just before it crossed the goal line seven minutes into the final period, a play confirmed by video review.

Right winger Joe Pavelski, defenseman Matt Irwin and center Patrick Marleau also scored for San Jose. The loss snapped Montreal goalie Carey Price's franchise record 10-game winning streak. Price made 33 saves.
