SPRINGFIELD – Governor Bruce Rauner
Tuesday administered the Oath of an Officer to Leo P. Schmitz, the newly
appointed Director of the Illinois State Police (ISP) at the Illinois
Capitol Building. Director Schmitz was appointed by Governor Bruce
Rauner on February 4, 2015, and unanimously confirmed by the Illinois
State Legislature on February 17, 2015.

Prior to his appointment, Director Schmitz spent more than 28
years in law enforcement and is proven to be uniquely qualified to
serve in this capacity. Director Schmitz’ vast law enforcement
experience and commitment to the people of Illinois will serve to
carry on the finest traditions of Integrity, Service and Pride
during his leadership of the ISP.
“It is a great honor to administer the Oath of an Officer to
Director Leo Schmitz. The Oath symbolizes the very essence of why
brave men and women volunteer to protect and serve others,” said
Governor Bruce Rauner. “Director Schmitz’ experience, leadership and
dedication will continue to move the Illinois State Police forward
and improve the safety and quality of life in Illinois communities,”
he added.
As a multifaceted police agency, the ISP enforces the laws
protecting the public while providing an array of special services
to local, state and federal agencies. The most significant
responsibility of the ISP is the safety of citizens through law
enforcement, investigations, forensic services, patrol, technical
assistance and safety education.

“I am honored to have been appointed by Governor Bruce Rauner to
serve as Director of the ISP,” said Director Leo Schmitz. “The many
upcoming challenges we face together will undoubtedly be difficult,
but not insurmountable. We will not compromise our primary goal of
providing outstanding police services to those we are sworn to
protect and serve throughout Illinois. I am grateful for this
opportunity and look forward to continuing the outstanding
reputation earned by the men and women of the Illinois State
Police,” he added.
After graduating from Southern Illinois University, Director Schmitz
began his law enforcement career in 1986 with the Chicago Police
Department (CPD) patrolling the streets of Chicago. Throughout his
law enforcement career, Director Schmitz has received numerous
special commendations, honorable mentions and recognition awards.
Director Schmitz rose through the CPD’s ranks all the while
continuing his education through senior law enforcement management
courses and programs.
