New football coach Seth Bass is planning a signing day for
incoming freshman.
“This really gets the eighth graders on board,” Bass said. “This
really gets the guys who’ll be coming in a freshman next year
excited about (football) now.”
All eighth graders who may want to play for the Railsplitters are
welcome. Bass said the ceremony will begin at 10 on Saturday morning
in the LCHS auditorium.
“We’ll have them sit down at the table, we’ll have the table cloth
on the table, we’ll have some balloons there. We’ll make it a big
deal,” the coach said about the pomp and circumstance of signing
day. “The community is more than welcome to come out and be
supportive of these guys signing.”
Bass said incoming freshman shouldn’t worry if they can’t make it on
Saturday, or are still thinking about coming out for the football
team.
“We don’t want them thinking this is their only chance to sign up,”
Bass added.
An eighth grade signing day is new for Lincoln.
While the Lincoln Youth Football League has had plenty of players
over the years, not everyone who played youth football ended up
playing high school football.
“If you look around at the successful high school programs across
the country, they’ve all got a very good feeder program,” Bass said
about the need to partner with Lincoln’s YFL. “The youth program is
very, very healthy. The numbers are very, very good. The teams are
fairly successful on a pretty regular basis.”

Bass said an integral part of his rebuilding strategy is to move
young football players up through the ranks, and to keep the best
football players in Lincoln for their high school career.
In addition to this weekend, Bass said he is focusing on the summer.
The new coach said he is trying to build a schedule for summer
workouts, including workouts for incoming freshman. And Bass said he
hopes to have a number of options for football camps for players
this weekend.
