On Tuesday March 10th, the
United States Department of Agriculture and the Illinois State Board
of Education will hold a public meeting in Lincoln. The purpose of
the meeting will be to seek out organizations and volunteers for a
summer food program for children in Logan County.
|
The meeting will be held at the Oasis Senior Center, 2810
Woodlawn Road, Lincoln from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m..
Nonprofit organizations, local government, churches, other community
organizations, and volunteers are urgently needed to help feed
hungry children through this program when school is out.
According to research done by the USDA and ISBE, Logan County had no
summer meal sites for children in 2014.
Based on the number of Logan County children eligible for free and
reduced-price school meals, the ISBE estimates that Logan County
should have at least six to 12 summer meals sites.
Logan County is one of the 15 Illinois counties targeted to increase
the number of summer meals sites. Sangamon and Tazewell Counties are
also target counties.
The ISBE administers the Summer Food Service Program in Illinois.
The Illinois No Kid Hungry Campaign is working closely with ISBE to
prevent child hunger and increase children’s access to nutritious
meals in the summer when free and reduced price school meals are not
available.
