[March 09, 2015]  CHICAGO – Illinois State Police (ISP) officials announced the arrest of a man who attempted to get passed a security check point at the John R. Thompson Center (JRTC) with a loaded handgun in his computer case.

On March 9, 2015, at approximately 12 p.m., Darren Collier, 49, of Flossmoor, Illinois, entered the JRTC screening area with a blue computer case. When the computer case was subjected to X-Ray screening, ISP Protective Services Unit (PSU) personnel observed what appeared to be a handgun. Collier was immediately detained and subsequently arrested when a loaded .38-calber Smith & Wesson handgun was recovered from his bag.

During questioning, Collier advised he was at the facility for a meeting and forgot the weapon was in his bag. He added he only carried the weapon for protection. Collier, who does not possess a valid Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) card, was charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm in a Prohibited Area, and No Valid FOID. Collier was processed and released on his own recognizance with a court date to follow.

“Illinois State Police PSU personnel are responsible for the wellbeing of the many state employees and guests that visit the JRTC on a daily basis,” said ISP PSU Lieutenant Frank Spizzirri. “The successful recovery of this weapon without incident was made possible by their attention to detail and quick response to the situation, added Spizzirri.
