03/23/2015 MLB Note - Miami Marlins Yelich, Christian
OF Christian Yelich signed a seven-year contract with the Miami
Marlins on Sunday.
The deal, worth a reported $49.570 million, is through the 2021
season, with a club option for 2022.
Yelich had previously been scheduled to make $570,000 in 2015.
The 23-year-old Yelich completed his first full season with the
Marlins in 2014, hitting .284 with nine home runs, 54 RBIs, 94 runs
scored and 21 stolen bases in 582 at-bats.
Last season, Yelich became the first Marlins outfielder ever to win
a Gold Glove Award. He led all National League left fielders with a
.996 fielding percentage in 2014, committing just one error in 262
chances.
Yelich, the first-round selection (23rd overall) by the Marlins in
the 2010 draft, made his major league debut on July 23, 2013.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Arizona Diamondbacks Ziegler, Brad
RHP Brad Ziegler made his first appearance in a spring training game
March 22, giving up one run on two hits and a walk against Colorado.
Ziegler underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in October,
and both he and the D-backs believe he will be ready for the start
of the regular season April 6. Ziegler is one of five "locks" to
make the bullpen, manager Chip Hale said March 22. Closer RHP
Addison Reed, RHP Evan Marshall and LHP Oliver Perez also will make
the pen, as will RHP Randall Delgado if he does not make the
rotation. Delgado is a long-shot for the rotation at this stage, but
he is out of options. Reed and Ziegler were delayed in camp -- Reed
has not pitched in a spring training game because of shoulder
soreness suffered in pre-game workouts -- but are expected to be
ready for the opener April 6.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Arizona Diamondbacks Collmenter, Josh
RHP Josh Collmenter, the D-backs' Opening Day starter, has made two
of his four spring training starts on a minor league field. Given an
option, Collmenter did choose to start against Opening Day opponent
San Francisco at Scottsdale Stadium on March 17. "Just to try to get
some reactions from hitters," Collmenter said. "A lot of times,
certain right-handers or certain left-handers typically can hit one
pitch better than another. I just wanted to see how they could do
with pitches they don't normally see. It's feedback for me,
something to have in the back of my mind that if I need it in a
situation, I know I can execute it and probably have success.
Sometimes it is just a decoy. Any time you can get them conscious of
a pitch, or especially location, if they are guarding a certain side
of the plate, it makes pitching to the other side a lot easier."
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Arizona Diamondbacks Trumbo, Mark
RF Mark Trumbo has been a seamless fit in right this spring after
moving from left field, and he is off to a hot start at the plate.
Trumbo was hitting .408 with four doubles, two homers and a
team-high 10 RBIs through March 22. "By and large, I think I've done
a decent job this spring," Trumbo said. "Everyone wants to get off
to a good start. You don't' want to put yourself in a hole.
Hopefully, I'll be able to carry this over (to the season)."
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Arizona Diamondbacks O'Brien, Peter
C Peter O'Brien was among the seven players reassigned to minor
league camp Sunday. RHP Jake Barrett, 1B/OF Danny Dorn, 1B/3B Nick
Evans, RHP J.C. Ramirez, 1B/3B Jamie Romak and 2B/SS Danny Worth
were the others. O'Brien also worked at first base in his first
major league spring training as a non-roster invitee.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - San Francisco Giants Posey, Buster
C Buster Posey is not an option to move to the outfield, despite
continued calls to move the star catcher out from behind the plate.
Giants manager Bruce Bochy is not considering his former National
League Most Valuable Player as an option in his injury-depleted
outfield.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - San Francisco Giants Belt, Brandon
1B Brandon Belt is an option to move to the injury-depleted
outfield, if needed. "I'm down for sure," Belt said when asked if
he'd agree to such a move. "I'm here to do whatever they need."
Moving Belt to left field would create more opportunities at first
base for Travis Ishikawa and Adam Duvall, both of whom appear headed
for backup roles. And it would free up Bochy to slide C Buster Posey
up the line at least a couple times a week, giving Hector Sanchez
and Andrew Susac more games behind the plate.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - San Francisco Giants Lincecum, Tim
LHP Tim Lincecum, a former two-time Cy Young Award winner, is
providing reasons for optimism. Lincecum was pulled early from one
appearance because of a stiff neck and missed a start while dealing
with lingering pain. But his return effort on March 21 was
impressive. And most important, the neck felt fine.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - San Francisco Giants Susac, Andrew
C Andrew Susac burst upon the scene as C Buster Posey's backup last
season. Giants fans had to wonder if they'd seen the last of C
Hector Sanchez. Not only had Susac demonstrated he could be the
club's No. 2 catcher for as long as Posey stayed behind the plate,
but Sanchez had suffered a concussion so serious, it was suggested
he consider a full-time position change if he wanted ever to play
again. Sanchez not only is back catching this spring, but he has
outperformed Susac in the first three weeks. There is little chance
the Giants will go north with three catchers, so the onus is on
Susac to win his job back in the final two weeks of games. He will
have to get healthy to do that. He took a cortisone shot in his
right wrist last week to help him get back in the lineup by the
weekend, then returned in a backup role March 22.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers Hernandez, Enrique
INF Enrique Hernandez started the spring 0-for-13 but warmed up with
a trip to Texas. The Dodgers played two exhibition games at the
Alamodome in San Antonio, and Hernandez hit a home run in each one.
He brought momentum back to Arizona and hit a home run for the third
consecutive game March 22. Hernandez is competing for a utility spot
on the Dodgers' bench but likely will open the season in Triple-A.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers Ethier, Andre
OF Andre Ethier said publicly over the winter that he would rather
be traded than spend another season in a reserve role with the
Dodgers. Nonetheless, the Los Angeles bench seems to be where Ethier
is headed with no trade market having developed for the veteran.
"It's a thing where I'm here ... until I hear otherwise," he said.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers Jansen, Kenley
RHP Kenley Jansen will open the season on the disabled list after
having left foot surgery in early February. However, don't look for
the Dodgers to go into the season with one reliever designated to
replace him as closer. "We know we have that with Kenley," Dodgers
manager Don Mattingly said. "I'm not sure we have that with anybody
else." Mattingly likely will let matchups and game situations
determine who closes games until Jansen returns a some point in May.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers League, Brandon
RHP Brandon League (left shoulder inflammation) received an
injection to treat his sore shoulder. He resumed throwing off a
mound March 22.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Colorado Rockies Quintanilla, Omar
INF Omar Quintanilla was reassigned to minor league camp on March
22. He adn't played since March 7 due to right forearm tightness but
was throwing. He played 216 games for the Rockies in five seasons
from 2005-2009 and had signed a minor league contract with them in
late January. In four games this spring, Quintanilla, 33, went
hitless in four at-bats.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Colorado Rockies Chacin, Jhoulys
RHP Jhoulys Chacin, 27, was unexpectedly released on March 22. He
made just 11 starts last year, the final one on June 28, and went
1-7 with a 5.11 ERA
before being shut down to a rotator cuff strain. He avoided surgery,
but this spring, Chacin's fastball was in the 86-88 mph range, and
he had a 6.52 ERA in
four Cactus League games, the last on March 22 against the Dodgers,
when he allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks in three-plus
innings with two
strikeouts in a 64-pitch outing. He threw his four-seam fastball
more often, trying to hone that pitch and increase his velocity, and
most of his pitches
were in the 87-88 mph range. During the season, Chacin throws his
sinker more than his four-seamer. Manager Walt Weiss said Chacin's
diminished velocity wasn't the issue since the Rockies have seen him
be effective in that range.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Colorado Rockies Betancourt, Rafael
RHP Rafael Betancourt escaped a potentially serious injury March 19
and escaped with a contusion when he was hit on the right side of
his jaw with a
line drive. The ball was hit by Kansas City's Brett Eibner with two
out in the bottom of the sixth but Betancourt was able to deflect
the ball with his glove
before being hit. He got to his feet and eventually walked off the
field, despite wanting to stay in the game. He did not display any
signs of a
concussion, and the following day, Betancourt checked out fine.
Betancourt, who turns 40 on April 29, is in camp on a minor league
contract as he attempts to fully come back from Tommy John surgery
on Sept. 17, 2013. He made the first of 14 appearances for Rookie
level Grand Junction on July 6, where he pitched through Aug. 14 and
went 1-0 with a 2.02 ERA in 13 1/3 innings. Betancourt then moved up
to Triple-A Colorado Springs, where he went 1-0 with a 10.50 ERA in
seven games, totaling six innings.
He is vying for one of the final spots in the Rockies' bullpen. In
four spring games, he has a 2.25 ERA, having allowed one run and
five hits in 3 2/3
innings with no walks and four strikeouts. More importantly,
Betancourt's fastball, which was understandably down last year, is
back to 90-91 mph, and
he's throwing all his pitches this spring.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Colorado Rockies Culberson, Charlie
INF Charlie Culberson, who hasn't played since March 8 due to a disk
issue in his lower back, took swings on March 20 and reported his
back felt better.
The Rockies acquired Culberson from the Giants for 2B Marco Scutaro
just before the trade deadline in 2012. He hit .293 in 47 games for
the Rockies in 2013, mostly playing left field, where he had little
experience. Culberson, who turns 26 on April 10, spent all but one
week in April with the Rockies in 2014 season but hit .195 in 210
at-bats in 95 games. He struggled to find any offensive groove with
sporadic playing time but provided reliable defense at three infield
positions. Culberson has to do regular maintenance on his back to be
able to play. The disk issue causes nerve pinching that affects his
legs.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Colorado Rockies Descalso, Daniel
INF Daniel Descalso was scratched from the lineup March 15 with a
right oblique strain. A free agent after the Cardinals did not
tender him a contract after last season, Descalso signed a two-year,
$3.6 million contract with the Rockies. If Descalso is not healthy
to start the season, it could create an opening on the roster for
switch-hitting INF Rafael Ynoa, who was impressive in September with
the Rockies when he made his major league debut and is hitting .281
(9-for-32) this spring with three RBIs or INF Cristhian Adames, who
made his major league debut and went 1-for-15 in seven games.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Colorado Rockies Morneau, Justin
1B Justin Morneau has not played since March 18 due to tendinitis in
his left elbow but is expected to return early this week. The injury
is to his non-throwing elbow but to the top hand of the left-handed
hitting Morneau, the reigning National League batting champion. He
is 3-for-18 but not worried about being ready for the start of the
regular season, since he can accumulate at-bats quickly in minor
league games. "I just want to feel like I don't need to cheat to get
to the ball inside," Morneau said. "It's getting to that pitch
without thinking about getting to it. It takes a little while. It's
a trust thing."
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Colorado Rockies Kahnle, Tommy
RHP Tommy Kahnle, who made the Rockies last year after being taken
from the Yankees in the Rule 5 draft, has yet to pitch at the
Triple-A level and has all three minor league options remaining. So
the Rockies don't have to keep him on their roster this season,
unlike last year. Kahnle appeared in 54 games as a rookie last year
and went 2-1 with a 4.19 ERA, allowing 51 hits in 68 2/3 innings
while averaging 4.1 walks and 8.3 strikeouts per nine innings. He
held left-handed batters to a .184 average (23-for-125) with 10
walks and 30 strikeouts. Right-handed hitters didn't fare
particularly well, either, averaging .228 (28-for-123) with 21 walks
and 33 strikeouts. Kahnle has a 2.08 ERA in five spring games with
three walks and six strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. He's competing for
one of the final spots in the bullpen.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Colorado Rockies Chacin, Jhoulys
LHP Jorge De La Rosa (left groin strain) had his first spring start
pushed back twice. Originally, he was to pitch March 7. That was
pushed to March 12,
then back again to March 20. The Rockies have him penciled in to
start the home opener, April 10, but he could begin the season on
the disabled list after
aggravating his left groin March 20 in his Cactus League debut. He
underwent an MRI the following day that determined De La Rosa had a
left groin strain. He will be reevaluated March 23 to determine when
he might make his next Cactus League start.
-----------------------------------------------
[to top of second column] |
MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers Ryu, Hyun-Jin
LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu woke up with a sore shoulder after his Cactus
League start on March 17. Diagnosed with inflammation in his
pitching shoulder, Ryu received an injection but was still
experiencing discomfort four days later when he tried throwing. He
returned to Los Angeles on March 22 with plans to see Dr. Neal
ElAttrache and have his shoulder examined.
This is the third time in less than 12 months that Ryu was sidelined
by shoulder pain. He went on the disabled list last April and May,
missing 23 games with the same issue. In September, he left his last
start of the regular season after one inning with a sore shoulder.
He underwent a contrast MRI that revealed inflammation once again
but no structural damage in his shoulder. He returned to pitch in
the Dodgers' first-round playoff series three weeks later.
----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers Kershaw, Clayton
LHP Clayton Kershaw was hit in the left side of the jaw by a
broken-bat line drive during his start against the A's on March 20.
The drive caromed away for a base hit, leaving Kershaw on the
ground.
Kershaw recovered and stayed in the game for two more innings. Two
teeth were damaged by the drive, requiring dental work, but
Kershaw's preparations for the season will be unaffected.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers Bedard, Erik
LHP Erik Bedard was one of the candidates to fill in for LHP
Hyun-Jin Ryu (sore left shoulder) in the rotation at the start of
the season. However, he left his March 20 start after just one
inning and was diagnosed with a strained latissimus muscle.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - New York Yankees De Paula, Jose
LHP Jose De Paula was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on
Friday. De Paula dealt with arm soreness this spring. He pitched two
scoreless innings in his only appearance of the spring March 7.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Chicago Cubs Lester, Jon
LHP Jon Lester missed his scheduled start March 21 because of a
tired arm, but manager Joe Maddon said that he does not expect the
team's ace to miss the season opener. Lester pitched five scoreless
innings in his first two spring starts but gave up six runs, seven
hits and two home runs in 3 1/3 innings March 16 against the San
Diego Padres. Maddon said Lester was upbeat and feeling great and
would throw between starts, as usual, before starting again March
26.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Los Angeles Angels Hamilton, Josh
OF Josh Hamilton, who reportedly had a relapse of cocaine and
alcohol use during the offseason, expects to hear soon on possible
discipline. Commissioner Rob Manfred said his office should make a
decision by Opening Day. "We are working toward a result," Manfred
said March 20. Hamilton went to New York last month for a meeting
with Major League Baseball officials. Hamilton is also recovering
from shoulder surgery and his status for Opening Day was in jeopardy
because of the injury. "Obviously, with Josh Hamilton recovering
from surgery, that may give us some more time because he won't
play," Manfred said. Hamilton, 33, has a history of substance abuse
extending to his early career in the minor leagues that included a
suspension from February 2004 to June 2006.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Baltimore Orioles Wieters, Matt
C Matt Wieters is unlikely to be ready to start the season, manager
Buck Showalter said Saturday. Wieters, who is returning from Tommy
John surgery last June, made his spring debut at catcher on March 18
and then was shut down for a week the following day. "This is
usually a 10-month thing at least, especially with catchers,"
Showalter said of the recovery process. "You're hearing people go
down with this and you are talking 12 to 14 months. We're on if not
ahead of schedule. A lot of people when it originally happened
though even May 1 was a push."
Showalter said Wieters would not be considered as the designated
hitter to start the season on April 6.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Baltimore Orioles Urrutia, Henry
OF Henry Urrutia was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk on March 21
despite a .320 spring average with one homer and seven RBIs in 15
games. Urrutia, 28, hit .270/.284/.338 with no homers and 17 RBIs in
51 games for Norfolk last year. He hit .276 in 24 games for the
Orioles in 2013, his only major league action.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - New York Yankees Ramirez, Jose A.
RHP Jose Ramirez, who was competing for a spot in the Yankees'
bullpen, was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on March 21.
He posted a 2.25 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 4/0 K/BB ratio over four innings
this spring. Ramirez made eight relief appearances with the Yankees
last year and went 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Washington Nationals Strasburg, Stephen
RHP Stephen Strasburg missed his scheduled start March 22 against
the Detroit Tigers because of a sprained left ankle he sustained
during conditioning drills two days earlier. Strasburg threw a
bullpen session March 22 instead. Manager Matt Williams said the
injury was not considered serious and that Strasburg was expected to
miss only a few days. Strasburg missed a start earlier this spring
because of an ingrown toenail. He was 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA through
two spring starts, with seven strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - San Diego Padres Shields, James
RHP James Shields worked five hitless innings against the Cubs on
Sunday. He walked two and struck out six while throwing 68 pitches.
The career-long American Leaguer, Shields was also 1-for-2 at the
plate and is 2-for-3 this spring. Shields' pitching numbers this
spring: 12 innings, four hits, four runs (three earned), four walks,
16 strikeouts.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - San Diego Padres Morrow, Brandon
RHPs Brandon Morrow (4.26 earned run average this spring) and RHP
Odrisamer Despaigne (2.25 ERA) are alone in the battle for the fifth
spot in the rotation after the Padres sent LHP Robbie Erlin and RHP
Matt Wisler to their minor league camp Sunday morning.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - San Diego Padres Despaigne, Odrisamer
RHP Odrisamer Despaigne (2.25 ERA) and RHPs Brandon Morrow (4.26
earned run average this spring) are alone in the battle for the
fifth spot in the rotation after the Padres sent LHP Robbie Erlin
and RHP Matt Wisler to their minor league camp Sunday morning.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Baltimore Orioles Norris, Bud
C Derek Norris is expected to play around 120 games this season,
according to Padres manager Bud Black. "That's a number that both
Derek and I expect," said Black. "He's geared to be an every-day
catcher in the major leagues."
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - San Diego Padres Kelly, Casey
RHP Casey Kelly, 25, worked through a perfect inning against Arizona
on seven pitches (six strikes) on March 21 in his first outing of
the spring. Although he hadn't pitched since last May 19 and he was
rehabbing since having Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery on
April 1, 2012, Kelly's debut this spring was delayed by a groin
injury he sustained Feb. 20 rather than his arm. "We wanted to see
Casey come out of that inning feeling good about his stuff, his arm
and his groin and he did," manager Bud Black said. Even so, Kelly
was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on March 22.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Chicago Cubs Bryant, Kris
3B Kris Bryant hit two more homers March 21, his seventh and eighth
this spring, to lead the Cubs over the Seattle Mariners. His seventh
blast, in the first inning, came off former a Cy Young Award winner,
RHP Felix Hernandez. A confident Bryant had four more homers than
anyone else this spring. The Las Vegas native is ticketed to start
the season at Triple-A Iowa, but the confident Bryant is making it
tough on the Cubs. "I've said it all along: I'm playing with a chip
on my shoulder but at the same time having fun," he said. Bryant
belted 43 homers last season, more than anyone else in Double-A or
Triple-A. This spring, he was hampered by a balky shoulder -- a
minor setback that might keep him in the minors to hone his
defensive skills.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Detroit Tigers Cabrera, Miguel
1B Miguel Cabrera made his Grapefruit League debut March 22. Serving
as a designated hitter, Cabrera went 1-for-3 with a single as a
Detroit split squad tied Washington 7-7 in Lakeland, Fla. Cabrera
had right ankle surgery in October. Looking ahead to Opening Day,
Cabrera said, "I'm positive (I'm) going to be there."
Cabrera could be back at first base during the week of March 23-29.
"He's moving pretty well taking grounders, so a few days of DHing --
if everything goes well -- there's no reason he can't play first in
the not too distant future," manager Brad Ausmus said.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Detroit Tigers Martinez, Victor
DH Victor Martinez made his Grapefruit League debut March 22, going
0-for-3 in the Tigers' 5-3 loss to the Atlanta Braves.
Martinez, 36, underwent surgery Feb. 10 to repair a torn meniscus in
his left knee. He hit .335/.409/.565 with 32 homers and 103 RBIs in
2014, and he finished second in AL MVP voting.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Los Angeles Angels Rasmus, Cory
RHP Cory Rasmus for the first eight weeks of the season because of
an undefined "core injury." The Los Angeles Times reported March 21
that the 27-year-old Rasmus will have surgery on Tuesday in Arizona.
His injury leaves a significant hole in the Angels pitching staff.
Last season, Rasmus compiled a 3-2 mark with a 2.57 ERA in 30 games.
He made six starts when Garrett Richards was hurt.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Izturis, Maicer
INF Maicer Izturis will begin the season on the disabled list
because of a strained groin. Izturis was injured during the March 20
Grapefruit League game against the Rays, and he will remain idle for
about 10 days before beginning rehabilitation. Izturis was the
front-runner to be the Blue Jays' second baseman on Opening Day.
With Izturis sidelined, Ryan Goins, Steve Tolleson and Devon Travis
will compete for the job. Izturis, 34, missed most of the 2014
season after tearing the medial collateral ligament in his left knee
last April. In 11 games last year, he hit .286 with no homers.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Cecil, Brett
LHP Brett Cecil will be the Toronto Blue Jays' closer this season.
He won a competition that included right-handed prospects Aaron
Sanchez and Miguel Castro. Sanchez was removed from the bullpen
equation when he was needed in the rotation after Marcus Stroman
sustained a season-ending knee injury.
"He closed out four or five last year; he was really good in the
eighth inning," manager John Gibbons said of Cecil, according to the
Toronto Sun. "He strikes guys out. He really has one of the better
curveballs in the game. You never know for sure if a guy can
(succeed as a closer), it but he deserves the opportunity. We think
he can."
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Sanchez, Aaron
RHP Aaron Sanchez will be in the Blue Jays' rotation to start the
season. Sanchez was removed from the bullpen equation when he was
needed in the rotation after RHP Marcus Stroman sustained a
season-ending knee injury.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - New York Yankees Pirela, Jose
CF Jose Pirela was diagnosed with a concussion after crashing into a
center field wall in the first inning of an exhibition game against
the New York Mets in Port St. Lucie, Fla., on March 22. Pirela
crashed into the wall attempting to track down a fly ball hit by
Mets CF Juan Lagares. He crashed face first, hit the back of his
head on the warning track and went onto his back after trying to sit
up. Pirela, 25, was able to walk, was helped into a golf cart and
taken by ambulance. A CT scan revealed that Pirela has a concussion,
although the brain scan came back normal. Neck and spine MRI exams
showed no damage, and Pirela was released from the hospital that
night, the Yankees announced. Pirela was batting .370 during spring
training, and the Yankees were uncertain how long he will be out.
The Yankees were also using him in center field while Jacoby
Ellsbury recovers from an oblique strain.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - New York Mets Colon, Bartolo
RHP Bartolo Colon will start Opening Day for the Mets on April 6
against the Nationals in Washington. Colon will be the oldest
Opening Day starter in Mets history at 41 years, 317 days old. In
baseball history, only Randy Johnson and Jamie Moyer were older when
they made Opening Day starts. Colon, who saw his first major league
action as a 24-year-old flame-thrower with the Indians in 1997, has
had six Opening Day assignments in his lengthy career. He made four
starts this spring through March 22 and had a 7.71 ERA. Last season,
Colon compiled a 15-13 record with a 4.09 ERA.
