[April 30, 2015]  MOUNT PULASKI - Melvin E. Singley, 91, of Mount Pulaski passed away at 5:45 a.m. Thursday April 23, 2015 at Vonderlieth Living Center in Mount Pulaski.

Visitation: One hour prior to the service on Monday.

Service: 11:00 a.m. Monday April 27, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Mount Pulaski

Obituary

Melvin E. Singley, 91, of Mount Pulaski passed away at 5:45 a.m. Thursday April 23, 2015 at Vonderlieth Living Center in Mount Pulaski.

Melvin was born on September 24, 1923 in Delavan to Roy Allen and Clarice Marie Weiss Singley. He married Shirley Jean Logan on March 31, 1946 in Lincoln. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Jane (Gary) DeWitt of Lincoln; and Rebecca (John) Drake of Chestnut; one brother, Robert (Darlene) Singley of Mount Home, AR; two sister-in-laws, Rosie Singley of Topeka; and Helen Singley of Lincoln, IL; three grandchildren, Andrea Manner, Didi Drake and Andrew DeWitt and three great grandchildren: Nicholas Ian Scassiferro, Sebastian Alexander Scassiferro, and Abigail Elizabeth Manner. He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers; Charles, James, William and Roy and his son Todd Singley.

Melvin was a train dispatcher for Illinois Central Railroad for 43 years. He was a member of the Mount Pulaski First United Methodist Church, former owner of the coffee shop at Hilltop Bowl and was a member of the Mount Pulaski VFW Post #447. He was a radio dispatcher for the United States Navy in the 136 Seabees during WWII and was on the first landing craft into Japan. He served at Yokosuka Naval Base and witnessed the signing of the peace treaty ending WWII between Gen. Douglas McArthur and Emperor Hirohito.

Services for Melvin will be 11:00 a.m. Monday April 27, 2015 at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Mount Pulaski with Rev. Rachel Stockle officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Burial will be at Mount Pulaski Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded. Memorials may be made to the Mount Pulaski First United Methodist Church.
