[May 01, 2015]  April 30 (The Sports Xchange) - St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright underwent surgery Thursday to repair a torn Achilles, and general manager John Mozeliak said the team hopes Wainwright will be ready for spring training next year.

Wainwright, 33, is expected to need 9-12 months to recover.

The New York Mets placed right-hander Rafael Montero on the 15-day disabled list.

Montero, who started Tuesday against the Miami Marlins, has inflammation in his rotator cuff. The Mets had demoted him to Triple-A Las Vegas, but they rescinded that move.

Kansas City Royals right-hander Yordano Ventura abandoned his appeal of a seven-game suspension resulting from a brawl last Thursday in Chicago during a game against the White Sox.

Ventura was one of five players suspended after a bench-clearing incident. His penalty was stiffer than the others because of his role as an instigator. (Editing by Frank Pingue)
