[May 04, 2015]  May 3 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Sunday's Major League Baseball games:

Cardinals 3, Pirates 2 (14 innings)

Second baseman Kolten Wong yanked a one-out solo homer to right-center field in the bottom of the 14th inning, lifting St. Louis to a win over Pittsburgh and a sweep of their series.

Pedro Alvarez hammered a two-out solo homer in the top of the 12th inning to give Pittsburgh a short-lived lead.

Astros 7, Mariners 6

Evan Gattis smacked a tie-breaking home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, his second homer of the game, to lift the Houston to a four-game series sweep of Seattle.

Houston extended its winning streak to 10 consecutive games in somewhat unconventional fashion, coughing up a five-run lead before Gattis struck against Mariners rookie right-hander Carson Smith.

Tigers 6, Royals 4

Anibal Sanchez handcuffed Kansas City again, and first baseman Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer as Detroit held on for a win.

Catcher Alex Avila drove in three runs with a pair of singles as the Tigers erupted for six runs in the first five innings after scoring only four runs in the first three games of the series.

Nationals 1, Mets 0

Washington right-hander Doug Fister dominated New York as he threw 6 1/3 shutout innings to lead the Nationals to their second straight win.

The Nationals won three of four from the Mets to close within four games of first-place New York, which has lost seven of its last 10.

Phillies 6, Marlins 2

Ryan Howard hit a rare triple to help Philadelphia snap a five-game losing streak with a win over Miami.

Howard's hit tied the score at 2-2 in the sixth inning where the Phillies went ahead for good.

Braves 5, Reds 0

Julio Teheran bounced back from three consecutive shaky starts to throw six scoreless innings and help Atlanta beat Cincinnati.

Kelly Johnson and Jonny Gomes homered for the Braves.

Indians 10, Blue Jays 7

Cleveland answered a six-run Toronto fourth inning with a six-run fifth inning on their way to the victory.

Second baseman Jason Kipnis had four hits, including a home run, and the Indians' bullpen picked up struggling starter Trevor Bauer as Cleveland managed to split the four-game series.

Orioles 4, Rays 2

Outfielder Adam Jones matched a career high with four hits, including a two-out, two-run single in the seventh, rallying Baltimore past Tampa Bay.

The Orioles took two of three games in a series moved from Maryland to Florida because of the riots in Baltimore last week.

Brewers 5, Cubs 3

Aramis Ramirez snapped a 3-3 tie with a two-run eighth inning single as Milwaukee beat Chicago.

The Brewers' third baseman went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, including a second inning home run.

Twins 13, White Sox 3

Powered by a grand slam by third baseman Trevor Plouffe, Minnesota scored seven runs in the third inning and pounded out 19 hits.

The win gave the Twins a four-game sweep of the White Sox, who have now lost five consecutive games.

Giants 5, Angels 0

San Francisco won for the sixth straight time, sweeping Los Angeles behind a strong outing by starter Tim Lincecum.

The right-handed Lincecum (2-2) allowed just three singles over eight shutout innings while Nori Aoki and Joe Panik hit early home runs for the Giants.

Athletics 7, Rangers 1

Oakland right-hander Sonny Gray pitched seven scoreless innings to improve to 4-0 and lower his ERA to 1.67 in a win over Texas.

Gray allowed just two hits and struck out a season-high 10 while Oakland home run leader Stephen Vogt had his fifth homer of the year.

Padres 8, Rockies 6

Justin Upton hit his seventh homer of the season and drove in three runs, and slumping Jedd Gyorko hit a 438-foot, two-run homer as San Diego defeated Colorado to complete a three-game sweep.

Seven home runs were hit in the game, including two each by Rockies center fielder Charlie Blackmon and third baseman Nolan Arenado.

Yankees 8, Red Sox 5

The surging New York Yankees completed their first three-game sweep at Fenway Park since 2001 with a 8-5 victory over the sagging Boston Red Sox.

Former Boston center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury reached base six straight times with four singles for New York (16-9). Mark Teixeira and Brett Gardner hit home runs as the first-place Yankees increased their lead in the AL East to three games with their 10th win in the last 12 games.

The Red Sox fell to 12-13.

Dodgers 1, Diamondbacks 0 (13 innings)

Catcher Yasmani Grandal hit a home run in the bottom of the 13th inning to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a 1-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Eight Los Angeles (16-8) pitchers combined on the shutout while Paul Goldschmidt had three hits in the loss for the Diamondbacks (10-14).
