LAST YEAR: Martin Kaymer of Germany holed an improbable 30-foot putt
for par on the famous island green on the 17th hole and held on for
a one-stroke victory over Jim Furyk. The German closed with a
1-under-par 71, compared to Furyk's 66, and nearly blew a
three-stroke lead by making a double bogey 6 on the 15th hole.
However, after making that par putt at No. 17, he did not reach the
final green in regulation, but he got up-and-down for another par
sinking a four-foot putt. Kaymer, who won the 2010 PGA Championship
in a playoff over Bubba Watson at Whistling Straits, went on to
claim his second major title last June in the U.S. Open at Pinehurst
No. 2 -- becoming the first golfer to win those two events in the
same season. He was in or near the lead almost all the way in the
Players last year after starting with a 63.

and closed out an even-par 72, while Calcavecchia pressed him with a
70. Perry became the second player to win in three consecutive
Champions Tour major starts, joining Gary Player, who did it in
1987-88. Perry won the Constellation Senior Players Championship and
U.S. Senior Open in consecutive tour starts a year earlier, then
skipped the Senior British Open. Jack Nicklaus is the only other
player to win all three of those major titles.

Last year: Lizette Salas captured her first victory on the LPGA
Tour, coasting to a four-stroke victory over Lexi Thompson, Sarah
Jane Smith and Yani Tseng of Thailand. Salas, who was a four-time
All-American at USC and helped the Trojans win the 2008 NCAA
Championship, closed with an even-par 71 after building her lead
with scores of 67-68-65 the first three days. Salas started the day
with a three-stroke lead before making birdies on the third and
fifth holes while increasing her advantage to six shots, allowing
her to play relatively stress-free golf the rest of the way. Tseng,
trying to win for the first time since 2012, got within three
strokes with three birdies on the back nine but made a late double
bogey and shot 69.
