MLB Note - Pittsburgh Pirates Rodriguez, Sean
INF Sean Rodriguez made his fifth start of the season Sunday and
went 2-for-3 with a walk while playing right field and first base.
Rodriguez is hitting .406 in 32 at-bats out of his utilityman role
for the Pirates.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Pittsburgh Pirates Watson, Tony
LHP Tony Watson worked a scoreless eighth on Sunday after the
Cardinals scored in the two prior innings. Watson has pitched 16
scoreless outings over 18 appearances and 20 innings.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - St. Louis Cardinals Wong, Kolten
2B Kolten Wong went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs Sunday,
tying his career-best eight-game hitting streak in the process. He
is hitting .336 on the season and is batting .416 (15-for-36) in the
month of May.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - St. Louis Cardinals Lyons, Tyler
LHP Tyler Lyons made his second start of the season as the
replacement for Adam Wainwright in the rotation after he was
recalled from Triple-A Memphis last week. He did not factor in
Sunday's decision, allowing three runs on five hits in five-plus
innings. Lyons has not won a game in nearly two years, the last
coming May 28, 2013, at Kansas City.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - St. Louis Cardinals Molina, Yadier
C Yadier Molina finished 1-for-4 to stretch his hitting streak to
seven games. He's hit .391 (9-for-23) in that span to raise his
batting average to .267 after it fell to .231 last week.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - New York Mets Colon, Bartolo
RHP Bartolo Colon picked up his major-league-leading sixth win of
the season, improving to 6-1 with a 3.30 ERA as the Mets beat the
Phillies 7-4 on Sunday. The 41-year-old, in his second season with
the Mets, wasn't at his best, giving up four runs on eight hits in
six-plus innings, but his offense gave him the backing he needed to
pick up the victory. "You can't say enough about him," manager Terry
Collins said. "This guy, at his age...if you look around baseball
and if you're a pitcher, you've got to look at this guy"
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - New York Mets deGrom, Jacob
RHP Jacob deGrom, Monday's starter, bounced back from bad
back-to-back starts in his last outing, going seven innings and
allowing just one run against Baltimore to even his record at 3-3
and lower his ERA to 2.95. Prior to that, the 2014 Rookie of the
Year had given up 11 runs (nine earned) in 10 1/3 innings in
combined starts against the Yankees and Nationals. Those rough
outings came after he had given up just two runs in his first three
starts (19 1/3 innings) to start the year.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - New York Mets Murphy, Daniel
3B Daniel Murphy had a big game against the Phillies on Sunday,
going 3-for-5 as part of the Mets' season-high 14 hits in the 7-4
win. That extended his hitting streak to three games and raised his
average to .232, as he's hitting .340 (17-of-50) over the last 13
games. "It was great to see Dan get started and if that kick-starts
him, that's certainly something we've got to have," manager Terry
Collins said. "Because he's a big piece of our offense and if he
starts swinging the bat, I think it's going to be a different look."
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - New York Mets Tejada, Ruben
2B Ruben Tejada got his second start in a row on Sunday and took
advantage, going 1-for-3 with two runs scored in the win over the
Phillies. He's up to hitting .233 on the season and is 4-for-12
(.333) over his last four games. Manager Terry Collins said he would
be playing in one of the three games in Chicago, but wasn't sure
which one yet. "I don't know how many times I've got to tell
everybody, this guy is a good player," he said. "He think he's got a
lot of talent, and when he puts his mind to it, we see what we saw
the last couple of games."
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - New York Mets Syndergaard, Noah
RHP Noah Syndergaard was officially called up from Triple-A Las
Vegas. He was 3-0 with a 1.82 ERA at Las Vegas.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Texas Rangers Choo, Shin-Soo
RF Shin Soo-Choo went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 10
games, tied with Cleveland's Michael Brantley for the longest active
hitting streak in the American League.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Philadelphia Phillies Billingsley, Chad
RHP Chad Billingsley took the loss against New York on Sunday, going
five-plus innings while giving up five runs (all earned) on eight
hits. He did tack on a home run off Mets starter Bartolo Colon, the
third long ball of his career and first since June 5, 2011, at
Cincinnati. It was the second start for him after missing 25 months
due to arm issues, including Tommy John surgery. "I definitely felt
a little more comfortable out there today than the first time,
nerves were a little better today," he said.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Philadelphia Phillies Williams, Jerome
RHP Jerome Williams, Monday's starter, was a solid addition to the
Phillies rotation midway through last season, going 4-2 with a 2.83
ERA in nine starts after arriving in a trade from the Texas Rangers.
But he hasn't duplicated that success this season. Through six
starts, he's 2-2 with a 5.18 ERA. Throw out a six-inning, one-run
outing in his season opener, and that ERA rises to 6.00. His last
outing was his worst so far: 4 1/3 innings against Atlanta in which
he gave up eight hits and six runs in a loss.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Philadelphia Phillies Asche, Cody
3B Cody Asche snapped an 0-for-23 streak with a double in the
seventh inning of the Phillies' game against the Mets on Sunday. He
would go 1-for-4 with a run scored as his average dipped slightly to
.235.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Philadelphia Phillies Hernandez, Cesar
SS Cesar Hernandez entered Sunday's game as a pinch hitter and went
2-for-2 and picked up an RBI single in the seventh inning of the
Phillies' loss to New York. He has reached base in 12 of his last 22
plate appearances (.545 OBP), and leads the team in both walks (11)
and on-base percentage (.390).
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Philadelphia Phillies Utley, Chase
2B Chase Utley's batting average is still woeful (.116), but the
former All-Star hit his first double of the season in a 1-for-3
outing against New York. It was 110 plate appearances since his last
double, which came back on September 27 against Atlanta.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Texas Rangers Hamilton, Josh
OF Josh Hamilton went 1-for-3 with a single and two strikeouts in
his first appearance with Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday. Hamilton,
the former AL MVP in 2010, is expected to join the Rangers in 20
days.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Tampa Bay Rays Beckham, Tim
2B Tim Beckham snapped an 0-for-17 slump with a single in the bottom
of the sixth inning that ended Wandy Rodriguez's perfect bid.
Beckham is batting a paltry .208 on the season.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Tampa Bay Rays Guyer, Brandon
LF Brandon Guyer went 1-for-3 with an RBI single in the bottom of
the sixth inning that tied the game at 1-1. Guyer had his eighth RBI
in the past 10 games since April 26.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Seattle Mariners Olson, Tyler
LHP Tyler Olson (right knee contusion) was placed on the 15-day
disabled list May 9, retroactive to May 3. He had been optioned to
Triple-A Tacoma, but that move was rescinded.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Tampa Bay Rays Odorizzi, Jake
RHP Jake Odorizzi fought off the flu to pitch 6 2/3 innings and gave
up just one run and seven hits while striking out seven on 91
pitches (62 strikes). "I was surprised to get that deep in the
game," Odorizzi said. "My mentality was to get out there and do
that, but being able to do it while not feeling the greatest is a
good thing."
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Atlanta Braves Freeman, Freddie
1B Freddie Freeman drives pitchers crazy for the Washington
Nationals. He has owned the Nationals the past few years and even
former teammate Dan Uggla, now with Washington, can't give his new
teammates any advice on how to retire Freeman. Freeman was 2-for-4
Sunday and is hitting .328 this year. He is hitting .483 in his last
29 trips to the plate against Washington.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Tampa Bay Rays Cabrera, Asdrubal
SS Asdrubal Cabrera continued his slump at the plate going 0-for-3
with a walk and three strikeouts. The worst of the strikeouts came
in the ninth inning when he fanned on three straight pitches with
one out and runners on the corners. He is now batting just .205 on
the season.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Atlanta Braves Peterson, Jace
2B Jace Peterson made his second start in a row at second base after
Phil Gosselin started there on Friday. Peterson had two hits on
Sunday, scored a run and is now hitting .282.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Tampa Bay Rays Smyly, Drew
LHP Drew Smyly will have his MRI exam Monday. Things don't look good
for Smyly as the Tampa Bay Times reports it is likely a torn labrum
and he will miss the remainder of the 2016 season.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Washington Nationals Harper, Bryce
OF Bryce Harper was 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored on
Sunday. He now has six homers, eight runs scored and 13 RBIs with 10
hits in his last 16 trips to the plate.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Washington Nationals Span, Denard
CF Denard Span got the day off Sunday as Michael A. Taylor started
in center field. Span is hitting .284 in 16 games since coming off
the disabled list and has been solid as usual in center field.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Washington Nationals Taylor, Michael A.
OF Michael A. Taylor got the start in center on Sunday as veteran
center fielder Denard Span got the day off. Taylor was 1-for-3 and
is hitting .265.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Washington Nationals Scherzer, Max
RHP Max Scherzer will make the start on Monday at Arizona. Stephen
Strasburg, who left his start on Tuesday after three innings with
some soreness in his back, will be pushed back to Tuesday. Scherzer
has made six starts in his first season in Washington.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Washington Nationals Zimmermann, Jordan
RHP Jordan Zimmermann, who threw 107 pitches but only 65 for
strikes, gave up eight hits and three earned runs in six innings on
Sunday against the Braves. He struggled with his command most of the
day as many times catcher Wilson Ramos would set up inside and
Zimmermann would miss with a pitch outside. He did not figure in the
decision as he left in a tie game as rookie lefty Matt Grace came on
in the seventh. "I just couldn't get ahead of the guys with the
fastball," he said.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Washington Nationals Ramos, Wilson
C Wilson Ramos had two hits, including the game-winner in the
eighth, on Sunday. He has hit in 13 games in a row, one short of his
career high. "He has great power to the opposite field," said closer
Drew Storen.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Washington Nationals Strasburg, Stephen
RHP Stephen Strasburg (shoulder blade irritation) was in line to
pitch May 11 in Arizona, but will now pitch May 12 to give him an
extra day of rest.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Boston Red Sox Victorino, Shane
OF Shane Victorino (right hamstring strain) played his second rehab
game with Double-A Portland on Saturday and was expected to be
activated on Monday when the Red Sox open a three-game series in
Oakland. He could share right field with OF Jackie Bradley Jr., who
was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket on Sunday and played in the 6-3
win at Toronto. "When (Victorino) gets back to us, Vic's going to
get left-handed starters, if not more," manager John Farrell said.
"But Jackie's arrival here gives us a premium defender, and we
certainly like him against a lot of right-handed pitchers. We'll
find the right matchups. I'm not going to say it's a strict platoon
situation, by any means."
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Boston Red Sox Ross, Robbie
LHP Robbie Ross, Jr., was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket when RHP
Steven Wright was recalled from the Triple-A club. Ross was 0-0 with
a 6.17 ERA in 13 relief appearances with Boston. He had a .635 ERA
in his first five outings this season and then had a 1.50 ERA over
his next seven games. He allowed three runs on four hits and did not
record an out against Toronto on Friday, a game Boston lost 7-0.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Boston Red Sox Craig, Allen
INF/OF Allen Craig has not been the player at Boston as he was with
the St. Louis Cardinals and he was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket
with OF Jackie Bradley, Jr. being recalled from Pawtucket. A foot
injury near the end of the 2013 season led to a career-worst .215
batting average in 2104 for Craig. He was batting .135/.237/.192 in
24 games with the Red Sox this season. He had one homer and two
RBIs. In parts of five seasons with St. Louis, he hit
.291/.343/.460. "We sent him out to try get back on track and get
him more regular, more consistent at-bats, not only for his own
production but maybe so he can get into a situation where he can
come back and help us," manager John Farrell said. "This is as much
about Allen as it is us and the current stretch we're going through.
We felt like the best and most clear path to get us back on track is
to have every player hopefully performing to the best of their
abilities. For Allen, that meant more regular at-bats at Triple-A
for the time being."
-----------------------------------------------
[to top of second column] |
MLB Note - Boston Red Sox Bradley Jr., Jackie
OF Jackie Bradley, Jr. was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket for
Sunday's game and started in right field, going 0-for-4 in the 6-3
win over Toronto. In 24 games at Pawtucket, he was hitting
.343/.393/.465. He was recalled when INF/OF Allen Craig was optioned
to Pawtucket and likely will share right field with OF Shane
Victorino, who is expected to be activated from the disabled list
Monday. Even though Bradley is superb defensively in center, manager
John Farrell said he intends to keep CF Mookie Betts there, even
when both are in the same game. "Found out right before BP last game
(Saturday)," Bradley said. "Just got the call, had to get ready to
fly here. Right ear is still clogged up, can't hear out of my right
side." Bradley had some trouble with a bloop double by Toronto C
Josh Thole in the seventh inning on Sunday. The new artificial turf
at Rogers Centre has been slowing down the ball but Thole's hit
bounced over Bradley. ""Last year, it would've bounced even higher,"
he said. "It was one of those plays were you want to be aggressive
with it ... and either way, it's going to bounce up and he'll get a
double anyway. I just tried to catch it and get it in. Off the bat,
you feel like you can get it, but as you get close, you can't get it
but you've got so much range on it and you're so close you can't
back up off on it."
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Boston Red Sox Wright, Steven
RHP Steven Wright was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket when LHP
Robbie Ross, Jr. was optioned to Pawtucket. In four starts at
Pawtucket, he is 2-1 with a 3.24 ERA. In two previous stints this
season with Boston, he made only one appearance, April 10 in
Boston's 6-5 win in 19 innings at Yankee Stadium. Wright is coming
off two seven-inning starts in which he allowed a total of one run
on seven hits and five walks but manager John Farrell said Wright
will be a reliever for now.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Bautista, Jose
RF Jose Bautista, who has been restricted to the designated hitter
role because of a sore shoulder, was 1-for-3 with a walk in the 6-3
loss to Boston on Sunday. He has reached base safely in 10
consecutive games. After hitting .164/.325/.443 in April, he is
batting .333/444/.533 in May.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Encarnacion, Edwin
1B/DH Edwin Encarnacion was 1-for-3 with a walk in the 6-3 loss to
the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. He has reached base in 12 straight
games with a hit in 11 of them. He is 11-for-32 (.344) in May with
one home run and eight RBIs.
----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Colabello, Chris
OF/INF Chris Colabello was 3-for-4 in the 6-3 loss to the Boston Red
Sox on Sunday, his third multi-hit game in the past five. He is
10-for-18 (.555) with one homer and four RBIs in the five games
since he was promoted from Triple-A Buffalo.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Dickey, R.A.
RHP R.A. Dickey allowed two home runs and six runs in a 6-3 loss to
the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. The knuckleballer failed to record a
strikeout for his second straight game. He has not had a strikeout
in three of his past four games. He said he is searching for the
"swing-and-miss knuckleball." Dickey, who picked his first win of
the year on Monday with an eight-inning effort against the New York
Yankees, is 1-4 with a 5.00 ERA in seven starts this year. "I find
myself in that place often at the first of the year where you're
saying if I could have one pitch back it would be a much better
result," he said.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Tepera, Ryan
RHP Ryan Tepera made his major-league debut Sunday when he came out
for the seventh inning against the Boston Red Sox and retired all
six batters he faced. Tepera was a starter in the system but was
converted to relief last year. "He was hot down there, he was on a
nice little roll," manager John Gibbons said. "I tell you, he's got
some easy pop on his fastball. In Triple-A, he was starting to
master a cutter and it's becoming a big pitch for him." The
27-year-old had a 0.57 ERA in eight outings with Triple-A Buffalo
and was recalled on Friday. "I'm kind of at a loss for words
actually," Tepera said after his debut. "It was unbelievable. I've
dreamed of this for a long time -- ever since I was a little kid. It
was awesome."
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Pittsburgh Pirates Guilmet, Preston
RHP Preston Guilmet was designated for assignment Sunday to make
room on the 40-man roster for INF Steve Tolleson, whose contract was
selected from Triple-A Buffalo. He was claimed on waivers from
Pittsburgh on Dec. 23, 2014. He was optioned to Buffalo on March 14
and was 0-0 with a 1.26 ERA in 10 relief appearances with the
Bisons.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Tolleson, Steve
INF Steve Tolleson had his contract selected from Triple-A Buffalo
on Sunday after OF Michael Saunders (left knee inflammation) was put
on the 15-day disabled list. RHP Preston Guilmet was designated for
assignment to make room for Tolleson on the 40-man roster. Tolleson,
who can be used in the outfield as well as the infield, was
designated for assignment when OF Michael Saunders returned from the
disabled list on April 25. Tolleson cleared waivers on May 5 and was
assigned outright to Triple-A Buffalo, where he batted .222
(2-for-9) with one RBI in two games. In seven games with Toronto
this season, Tolleson is batting .200/250/.400 with two RBIs.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Saunders, Michael
OF Michael Saunders (left knee inflammation) was put on the 15-day
disabled list on Sunday after he was 0-for-4 and played left field
in Saturday's 7-1 win over Boston. INF Steve Tolleson was promoted
from Triple-A Buffalo and RHP Preston Guilmet was designated for
assignment to make room for Tolleson on the 40-man roster. Saunders
had surgery to remove part of the meniscus of the left knee late in
February. It was injured when he stepped on a sprinkler head on a
training field while shagging fly balls. He started the season on
the disabled list and returned on April 25. After he struggled in
last weekend's games in Cleveland, he had the knee drained and
received a cortisone shot on Monday and did not play again until
Saturday. "It's tough," he said. "It's definitely feeling a little
bit better than what it was in Cleveland after getting it drained.
It's gotten to the point where it was really affecting my ability to
play the game. I tried to grind through it the last couple weeks or
so and it's gotten to the point where it's affecting me. And it's
not fair to anybody -- myself or the team." The plan is to give the
knee rest.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Estrada, Marco
RHP Marco Estrada will make his second start of the season on Monday
when the Blue Jays open a three-game series against the Baltimore
Orioles at Camden Yards. After making six relief appearances,
Estrada made his first start of the season on Tuesday to take the
spot left when LHP Daniel Norris was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo.
Estrada allowed eight hits and five runs (four earned) in 4 2/3
innings in a 6-3 loss to the New York Yankees. He has faced the
Orioles twice in his career for a total of two relief innings and an
earned-run average of 4.50.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Colorado Rockies Oberg, Scott
RHP Scott Oberg, who gave up a two-run pinch-hit homer to Justin
Turner in the eighth, has a 7.27 ERA in 11 games. Eight have been
scoreless, but in the other three, two against the Dodgers, Oberg
has allowed nine runs, seven earned, in 1 2/3 innings, including
five home runs. Four have been hit by the Dodgers.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Colorado Rockies Hundley, Nick
C Nick Hundley's run-scoring single in the fourth extended his
career-high hitting streak to 12 games. During the streak, Hundley
is hitting .415 (17-for-41) with three doubles, one triple, two
homers and eight RBIs.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Colorado Rockies Hawkins, LaTroy
RHP LaTroy Hawkins (right biceps tendinitis) threw his first bullpen
session since going on the disabled list April 22. Manager Walt
Weiss said, ''Everything went well. We'll see how he shows up
tomorrow and we'll go from there. We're getting close to him
pitching in some capacity, not here yet. Maybe a rehab assignment.
We'll start thinking about those things.''
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Arizona Diamondbacks Hudson, Daniel
RHP Daniel Hudson threw 56 pitches in 3 1/3 innings scoreless
innings in a spot start Sunday, his first major league start since
June 26, 2012. He stepped in from the bullpen after rainouts Monday
and Tuesday in Colorado left the Diamondbacks without an available
starter on regular rest. "It was cool," Hudson said. "I haven't done
it in a long time. To get the adrenaline going before a big league
baseball game is pretty special. I didn't know what to expect,
really. Just trying to keep my emotions in check early on and throw
strikes and try to set the tone from the beginning. You try to
figure out things as you go, really. I hadn't done it in three
years. Hudson retired nine of the first 10 he faced before giving up
two walks and a single in the fourth, but RHP J.C. Ramirez got the
final two batters with the bases loaded to preserve a 2-0 lead.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Arizona Diamondbacks Ramirez, J.C.
RHP J.C. Ramirez recorded his first major league victory while
pitching a career high 2 2/3 innings in relief of spot starter RHP
Daniel Hudson in the 2-1 victory Sunday. Ramirez gave up one run but
got out of two bases-loaded situations. "It was special because last
year I didn't play in the bigs, so it was a big time for me to come
back to the bigs," said Ramirez, who was 0-1 in 18 appearances with
Philadelphia in 2013. He was purchased from Triple-A Reno on Sunday
to add an arm to a bullpen that had been stretched thin and needed
length Sunday, because rainouts Monday and Tuesday in Colorado had
left the Diamondbacks without a starter who could be extended
Sunday. Ramirez, who was 0-1 with a 7.50 ERA in 18 games with
Philadelphia of 2013, did not give up a run in 11 appearances at
Reno this season. He had four hits, four walks and five strikeouts.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Arizona Diamondbacks Hill, Aaron
3B Aaron Hill has 12 hits and all three of his homers in his last 26
at-bats after going 1-for-3 with a bases-empty homer in a 2-1
victory over San Diego on Sunday. Hill, who has started about half
the season at second base or third, has raised his batting average
112 percentage points to .268 in that stretch. "You feeling good,
you're getting out there and getting some swings," Hill said. "You
just try to stay relaxed and get your work in." He had four hits
including a homer and four RBIs in 13-7 victory over Colorado in the
first game of a doubleheader Wednesday.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Arizona Diamondbacks O'Brien, Peter
C/OF Peter O'Brien is off to a fast start at Triple-A Reno. He was
second in the minor leagues in batting average (.370), third in OPS
(1.095) and tied for fourth in in home runs (eight) entering a
doubleheader Sunday. O'Brien, used primarily as a catcher in spring
training, played outfield only in the first three weeks at Reno
before going behind the plate for two straight games on Wednesday
and Thursday. He was a DH Friday and caught again Sunday.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Arizona Diamondbacks Dorn, Danny
OF/INF Danny Dorn was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Sunday. Dorn was
3-for-9 in his stint with the Diamondbacks.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - San Diego Padres Cashner, Andrew
RHP Andrew Cashner leads the NL with six losses but it is hardly his
fault. Cashner (1-6, 3.07) had given up 25 runs, 15 earned, and has
received an average of only slightly more than two runs per game in
his seven starts. "He's been a little bit a victim of low run
support and we haven't played great defense behind him," San Diego
manager Bud Black said. "That's not a good combo when you are a
starting pitcher." Cashner gave up two solo homers among five hits
in seven innings Sunday, striking out six without issuing a walk. "I
don't think I have a mistake missed yet this year," Cashner said. "I
thought the biggest thing today was my fastball command was really
good. It is getting better and moving in the right direction. The
run support is out of my control."
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers Kershaw, Clayton
LHP Clayton Kershaw was not involved in the decision while going 5
2/3 innings and allowing five runs on eight hits and four walks, one
intentional, striking out five. He gave up all five runs in the
fourth, the most runs Kershaw has yielded in an inning since he
allowed seven innings against Arizona on May 17, 2014. He walked
four for the first time since April 23, 2013, at the New York Mets.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - San Diego Padres Shields, James
RHP James Shields will start the final game of the Padres' two game
series Wednesday at Seattle, manager Bud Black said Sunday, with
fifth start RHP Odrisamer Despaigne being pushed back. Despaigne
started Thursday in Arizona and Shields went Friday. "It's his
regular day," Black said. Shields, who has won his last two starts
despite having given up seven homers, is 4-0 with a 4.25 ERA in
seven starts in his first season in San Diego.
