Reds 4, Giants 3
Marlon Byrd hit a go-ahead solo home run in the eighth inning after
Johnny Cueto delivered another solid outing, and the Cincinnati Reds
held on for a victory over the San Francisco Giants.
Cincinnati (18-17) improved to 21-8 against the Giants over the past
four seasons behind a strong seven innings from Cueto, who allowed
two runs on five hits and three walks. He struck out nine.
Tim Lincecum allowed three runs in 4 2/3 innings and took a
no-decision for the Giants (17-18).

Rays 6, Yankees 1
The Tampa Bay Rays pulled within a game of first place in the
American League East with a victory over New York.
Tampa Bay (20-16) got five scoreless innings from right-hander
Erasmo Ramirez (1-1), who won for the first time in more than a year
and 25 appearances.
Rene Rivera's three-run homer in the second inning was the biggest
blow against the Yankees (21-15), who lost starter Chase Whitley to
an elbow injury after only five outs.

Cardinals 2, Indians 1
Matt Carpenter's two-run homer in the eighth inning sent the St.
Louis to a 2-1 win over Cleveland at Progressive Field.
Carpenter's home run snapped a streak of 17 consecutive innings
without a run by the Cardinals, who still won two of three games in
Cleveland.
Trevor Bauer pitched seven scoreless innings and started the eighth
by retiring Pete Kozma on a flyout to left. Peter Bourjos drew a
walk and Marc Rzepczynski was brought in to face Carpenter, who
pounded a 2-1 pitch over the wall in center for his sixth home run.

Phillies 4, Pirates 2
Aaron Harang threw eight scoreless innings, allowing five hits and
striking out six, and Philadelphia took advantage of several
Pittsburgh miscues to salvage a split in the four-game, interstate
series.
Through four home starts, Harang (4-3, 2.03 ERA) has allowed just
two runs in 29 1/3 innings (0.61 ERA), the best home ERA among
qualified starters in the National League.
Ryan Howard hit his seventh home run of the season in the fifth
inning for the Phillies and went 3-for-4.

Tigers 13, Twins 1
Miguel Cabrera triggered a three-run first inning with an RBI single
and later added a pair of two-run homers and Detroit starter Anibal
Sanchez checked Minnesota on five hits in eight innings.
Cabrera's first home run came after Ian Kinsler doubled to lead off
the sixth inning and his second, his eighth homer of the season,
came the next inning after consecutive triples by Anthony Gose and
Kinsler.

Cubs 6, Mets 5
A seventh-inning passed ball gave Chicago a go-ahead run that led to
a win and a series sweep over New York.
Anthony Recker mishandled Hansel Robles' 1-0 pitch with two outs,
allowing Dexter Fowler to score from third for what proved to be the
winning run.
Manager Joe Maddon claimed his 800th career win as the Cubs won
their fourth in a row. The Mets, losers of four straight, suffered
their first four-game sweep at Wrigley Field since 1992.
Recker hit two solo home runs and Wilmer Flores hit one for the
Mets.

Padres 8, Nationals 3
Cory Spangenberg's two solo home runs and Derek Norris' five RBIs
lifted the San Diego Padres to a win over the Washington Nationals.
Spangenberg, San Diego's third baseman, smacked his first two homers
of the season. Norris, the Padres' catcher, hit a three-run homer
and a two-run triple.
