MLB Note - Milwaukee Brewers Sardinas, Luis

SS Luis Sardinas, 21, was recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs when the Brewers placed SS Jean Segura on the disabled list. Acquired from Texas in the Yovani Gallardo trade, Sardinas was hitting .288/.324/.386 with no homers and 18 RBIs in 32 Triple-A games this season.

SS Jean Segura, who was injured in pregame warmups Wednesday, was placed on the disabled list Thursday due to a broken right pinky finger. Segura is hitting .262/.306/.373 with two homers and 12 RBIs in 33 games.

MLB Note - Houston Astros Buchanan, Jake

RHP Jake Buchanan was recalled from Triple-A Fresno to fill the roster void left by LHP Brett Oberholtzer returning to the 15-day disabled list with a blister on his left index finger. Buchanan, who made 17 appearances (two starts) with the Astros last season, went 3-1 with a 5.08 ERA with the Grizzlies and will work in long relief.

MLB Note - Houston Astros Altuve, Jose

2B Jose Altuve went 2-for-3 with two steals, a double and was intentionally walked for the sixth time this season, which is tied for first in the majors along with Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera and DH Victor Martinez. Altuve now leads the American League with 13 stolen bases on the year.

DH Preston Tucker, in his fifth career game, had three hits, doubled twice and sparked a four-run seventh inning with an RBI double. The last Astro to have a three-hit game within his first five career games was Enrique Hernandez on July 4, 2014, at the Los Angeles Angels.

1B Jon Singleton finished 4-for-6 with two home runs and 10 RBIs for Triple-A Fresno in a 17-6 win over Triple-A Albuquerque on Thursday. The 23-year-old entered Thursday leading the minor leagues with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs, and given the Astros' ongoing struggles at first base and designated hitter, the conversation for what happens next suddenly includes Singleton. "He's making a case for consideration," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. "We're very aware of what's going on below us in the minors. We know what's going on here with our guys. There's no doubt Singleton is making a push to factor back into the major league roster."

RHP Drew Hutchison struck out a season-high nine batters in six innings, allowing two runs on five hits with one walk. Hutchison has posted a 2.45 ERA in his last two starts, allowing three earned runs over 11 innings. This marked his third quality start of the year.

RHP Steven Wright will start Sunday against Seattle in place of RHP Justin Masterson, who went on the disabled list. Both of Wright's major league appearances this season were in relief, and he is 1-0 with a 4.22 ERA through 10 2/3 innings. The knuckleballer went 2-1 with a 3.24 ERA in four starts for Triple-A Pawtucket earlier this season.

MLB Note - Boston Red Sox Ross, Robbie

LHP Robbie Ross Jr. was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to fill the roster vacancy created when the Red Sox placed RHP Justin Masterson on the disabled list. Ross had no decisions and a 6.17 ERA in 13 relief appearances for the Red Sox earlier this season. He pitched once for Pawtucket since his latest demotion on Sunday, throwing two innings of one-run ball Monday.

INF Luis Jimenez, designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Monday, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday. Jimenez was claimed off waivers from Milwaukee on May 3 and went hitless in one at-bat with Boston. He was 1-for-15 in 15 games for the Brewers.

LF Hanley Ramirez recorded his first double as a member of the Red Sox on Thursday night. His previous 10 extra-base hits all were home runs. He recorded his 11th multi-hit game of the year by going 4-for-5 to lift his average to .284.

2B Dustin Pedroia went 0-for-4 with a walk, reaching base safely for the 19th consecutive games. In that span, he is hitting .296 (21-for-71). The streak dates back to April 24.

MLB Note - Seattle Mariners Miller, Brad

SS Brad Miller played left field for the first time as a major-leaguer Thursday. He spent about the past 10 days working on making the transition with outfield coach Andy Van Slyke, while Chris Taylor assumed starting shortstop duties since returning from the disabled list.

Miller's goal is to keep it simple. Very simple. "One of my friends from back home gave me some advice," he said. "The walls don't move."

The Mariners need Miller in the lineup because he has a .253/.318/.424 slash line with two homers and 11 RBIs. The Mariners are also down an outfielder because Austin Jackson is on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained ankle, forcing left fielder Dustin Ackley to play center. Miller is borrowing one of Ackley's outfield gloves.

CF Austin Jackson, on the 15-day disabled list due to a sprained right ankle, will either go out on a rehab assignment Friday or later this weekend, depending on his progress, manager Lloyd McClendon said. Jackson has been out since May 4.

LHP Charlie Furbush has been the most consistent member of the Mariners' bullpen this season. He hasn't allowed a run in 16 of his club-leading 17 appearances, including a one-batter stint Thursday. He stranded all 11 runners he inherited, and he hasn't allowed a run in his past nine games.

MLB Note - Seattle Mariners Cano, Robinson

2B Robinson Cano ranks third in the AL with 11 doubles, but otherwise is off to a slow start to 2015. Cano went 1-for-4 Thursday, leaving him with a .268 average, a .681 OPS, one homer and 11 RBIs.

MLB Note - Seattle Mariners Elias, Roenis

LHP Roenis Elias skirted trouble for most the night. Making his fourth start this season with the Mariners after beginning the year with Triple-A Tacoma, the Cuban defector scattered eight hits over 6 1/3 innings. However, he allowed just one run while walking two and striking out two. It was Elias' third consecutive quality start, but he has yet to pick up a win. "He pitched a great game," manager Lloyd McClendon said. "That's his fourth game in a row where he pitched and deserved to get the win, and he didn't get the win. But he was outstanding. I didn't want him to go through the lineup four times."

MLB Note - San Diego Padres Myers, Wil

CF Wil Myers received a cortisone injection to help with his left wrist tendinitis. Manager Bud Black speculated Myers could be available next week if all goes as planned. The team hopes Myers can avoid a stint on the disabled list.

MLB Note - San Diego Padres Morrow, Brandon

RHP Brandon Morrow got a cortisone injection in his ailing right shoulder. Morrow hasn't been cleared yet to play catch. Morrow was among the team's most consistent starting pitchers before his shoulder revolted and he landed on the disabled list retroactive to May 3.

MLB Note - San Diego Padres Spangenberg, Cory

INF Cory Spangenberg continues to impress the Padres with an element he has and the rest of the team doesn't: speed. Manager Bud Black noted how Spangenberg plays with energy and has the quickness to allow the team to manufacture runs. "That is what he does," Black said. "That is his game, and that is good for the club." Spangenberg also hit his first two home runs of the season Thursday.

1B Yonder Alonso has increased the range of motion in his injured right shoulder, but there remains no timetable for his return. Alonso was hitting .333 before getting hurt. "He is still a ways off," manager Bud Black said.

INF Will Middlebrooks got his first start at first base Thursday night. The Padres are short-handed there with Wil Myers and Yonder Alonso battling injuries. Middlebrooks went 2-for-4, raising his average to .208.

C Wilson Ramos extended his career-high hitting streak to 16 games with an RBI single in the fourth inning. Ramos owns the longest active streak in the majors.

MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers Kershaw, Clayton

LHP Clayton Kershaw will make his fifth attempt to earn his 100th career victory Friday night when he faces the Colorado Rockies. In his previous four starts, Kershaw allowed 12 earned runs and 23 hits over 26 innings for a 4.15 ERA. He already has conceded 24 runs and five home runs this year compared to 42 total runs and nine homers all of last year. Nevertheless, Kershaw has amassed 30 strikeouts while permitting only five walks in the four-start winless streak.

MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers Coulombe, Daniel

LHP Daniel Coulombe was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Thursday for his second stint this season with the Dodgers. In nine relief appearances covering 11 1/3 innings at Triple-A, Coulombe conceded just two earned runs, amassed 16 strikeouts and recorded one save. The Dodgers also recalled Coulombe on May 4. He pitched one inning May 5 against the Brewers before being returned to the minors May 6.

1B Adrian Gonzalez needs only two RBIs to reach 1,000 for his career. Gonzalez hit a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning Thursday night and finished 2-for-3 with two doubles. He also walked twice and struck out once. Gonzalez leads the major leagues with 17 doubles.

MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers Anderson, Brett

LHP Brett Anderson amassed a season-best eight strikeouts while matching season lows with five hits and one walk allowed in 5 1/3 innings Thursday night. Anderson, who gave up two runs, also retired 12 of 14 batters between the second and sixth innings. At the plate, he hit a run-scoring double and walked in his two plate appearances. The hit was Anderson's third of his major league career; all three hits are doubles.

RHP Eddie Butler hopes to recover from his three previous starts Friday night when he faces Los Angeles. Since pitching against the Dodgers on April 19, Butler has lost two of three decisions. In 15 1/3 innings during those three starts, Butler has allowed nine earned runs, 18 hits and eight walks while striking out nine.

LHP Yohan Flande was recalled from Double-A New Britain on Thursday. Flande, 29, was 5-0 with one shutout and a 1.36 ERA in six starts for the Rock Cats. Flande has 30 strikeouts and only four walks in 39 2/3 innings, during which he permitted just 27 hits and six earned runs.

RHP Adam Ottavino was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Thursday. Ottavino, who shares the team lead with three saves, underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery May 7. Ottavino was the Rockies' closer before injuring his the triceps tendon above his right elbow April 25.

RHP Brooks Brown went on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 4, with an inflamed right shoulder Thursday. Brooks has allowed opponents to score against him in four consecutive appearances and in five of his past six. During those six outings covering 7 1/3 innings, Brown allowed five earned runs, eight hits and four walks while striking out four.

RHP Jordan Lyles underwent multiple treatments Thursday after he was hit on the right hand by a line drive in the first inning Wednesday night in the Rockies' 2-1, 11-inning loss to the Los Angeles Angels. Lyles was diagnosed with a contusion, as X-rays revealed no broken bones.

INF Rafael Ynoa was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque on Thursday. Ynoa made four starts, including two in left field, and went 2-for-12 as a pinch hitter. For the season, Ynoa was batting .241 (7-for-29) with three RBIs.

LF Corey Dickerson continues his strong season despite plantar fasciitis in his left foot. Dickerson went 1-for-3 to raise his average to .318. He ranks second on the team with 16 RBIs and shares second place with 15 hits.

1B Wilin Rosario went 2-for-4, hit a home run and drove in two runs Thursday night. Rosario replaced Justin Morneau in the Rockies' lineup. Since being recalled May 8 from Triple-A Albuquerque, Rosario is batting .313 (5-for-16) with the home run, three RBIs and three runs.

1B Justin Morneau got a night off Thursday. Moreau, the National League's defending batting champion, left Wednesday night's game in the eighth inning because of dizziness. When he played for the Twins, Morneau missed half of the 2010 season because of a concussion. He is day-to-day.

MLB Note - Colorado Rockies Gonzalez, Carlos

RF Carlos Gonzalez hit a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning Thursday night to give the Rockies a 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Gonzalez pounded a low fastball from Dodgers RHP Yimi Garcia into the right field stands. The home run and the three RBIs were the first for Gonzalez since April 25.

MLB Note - Colorado Rockies Bettis, Chad

RHP Chad Bettis made his season debut Thursday after being recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque on Wednesday. He induced 10 groundouts in five innings, collected three strikeouts and allowed four runs, seven hits and four walks while throwing 106 pitches. Bettis, who made his major league debut last year, has yet to win a big-league game.

LHP Mike Minor had season-ending left shoulder surgery Wednesday, the Braves announced Thursday.

Minor had a torn labrum repaired, and he should be back at full strength for the start of spring training.

MLB Note - Chicago Cubs Hendricks, Kyle

RHP Kyle Hendricks (0-1, 4.65 ERA) makes his seventh start of the season and third at home Friday. He has struck out 23 batters while walking eight. Hendricks previously faced the Pirates twice this season, going 0-1 with a 4.35 ERA. He struck out eight Pittsburgh batters April 29 at Wrigley Field.

LHP Jake Leathersich was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas for the second time this season prior to Thursday's game. He faced one batter and issued a walk in the eighth inning. Leathersich also pitched for the Mets from April 29-May 1 and threw one scoreless inning in two games. He didn't have a decision while posting a 1.59 ERA in 12 outings for Las Vegas.

MLB Note - Detroit Tigers Sanchez, Anibal

RHP Anibal Sanchez pitched eight innings of one-run ball Thursday to raise his record to 3-4. Sanchez, who struggled in most of his starts, was razor sharp after being handed a 3-0 lead in the first inning. "I used my fastball more," Sanchez said. "I tried to keep the ball down all day long." He struck out nine Twins and walked just one while allowing five hits.

MLB Note - Philadelphia Phillies Billingsley, Chad

RHP Chad Billingsley, Friday's starter against Arizona, struggled in both of his starts this season, going 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA. In 10 innings, he's given up 16 hits and 11 runs (10 earned), going five innings against the Braves and Mets after starting the season off in the minors. In his career, he's 10-9 with a 3.83 ERA in 27 appearances (25 starts) against the Diamondbacks.

MLB Note - Philadelphia Phillies Galvis, Freddy

SS Freddy Galvis raised his batting average to .353 by going 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs in the Thursday's win over Pittsburgh. The 25-year-old infielder, who entered the season hitting .218 in three prior seasons, is now second in the National League in hitting and has the best batting average and on-base percentage (.403) among all NL shortstops. He's hitting .406 at home this season.

MLB Note - Pittsburgh Pirates Harrison, Josh

LF Josh Harrison went 3-for-4 against the Phillies on May 14, raising his average up to .200 as the Pirates are still trying to get his bat going. Last year, Harrison -- who predominantly plays third base --hit .315, with 164 hits in 520 at-bats. "He's working hard to get better, he's trying to get that swing up in the zone, get the pitchers throwing him strikes," Hurdle said. "It was a much better day for him."

1B James Loney went 2-for-3 with a walk, raising his average to .240, and he turned a double play with a nimble catch of a line drive near the bag. Loney was caught stealing for the first time in two years, a rare attempt on the basepaths.

DH Alex Rodriguez drove in the Yankees' only run on a solo home run in the ninth inning, his ninth of the year. It was No. 663 of his career, and he now needs just two RBIs to match Babe Ruth at 1,992 for fourth on the all-time list.

RHP Jeremy Guthrie has his ERA at its lowest point (5.44) since he started the season. Guthrie has won his last two starts and allowed just four earned runs in those two outings. He could have gone longer than his five innings Thursday but was already at 94 pitches but he can still build on the outing. "It was all right, good at the start, and then just got tired at the end, and they had the rally so, the runs we got in the top of the sixth were huge to give us back the big lead," Guthrie said.

RHP Anthony Swarzak, designated for assignment by the Indians on Saturday, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Columbus. Swarzak had a 3.38 ERA in 10 relief appearances for Cleveland.

RHP Justin Masterson was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday with tendinitis in his throwing shoulder. Masterson will sit out the next few days before he begins throwing. He then will build back up with bullpen sessions before heading out on a rehab assignment, manager John Farrell said.

RHP Doug Fister walked a batter for the first time since April 27, a span of 19 1/3 innings. He allowed two home runs Thursday after allowing three in his previous outings. Fister gave up seven runs on eight hits in two innings Thursday after the game was delayed nearly two hours in the first inning. "I can't make any excuses for what I did tonight," he said. "It's one of those night I didn't do my job at all and put my team in a hole from the get-go."

RHP Casey Janssen (right shoulder inflammation) is scheduled to make his final minor league rehab appearances Saturday and Sunday. "That is his final hurdle," manager Matt Williams said. Janssen could rejoin the Nationals soon if there are no setbacks.

RHP Pedro Baez went on the 15-day disabled list Thursday due to a strained right pectoral muscle, and there is no timetable for his return. Baez sustained the injury while pitching in the eighth inning Wednesday in the Dodgers' 5-4 loss to the Marlins. Baez struck out three of the four batters he faced before giving up a double to 2B Dee Gordon.
