Obituary
John William Horn D.V.M. “Doc”, age 84 passed away
on Monday May 11, 2015 at his home in Grove,
Oklahoma.
Dr. Horn was the son of Harry L. and Grace (Burke)
Horn. He was born on October 29, 1930 in McLean Il.
John attended Logan County Il. schools from grades
1-8 and graduated from Atlanta, IL Community High
School in 1948. John enlisted in the US Air Force
and served his country from 1951-1955 during the
Korean War. During his service he was deployed
overseas to Okinawa and was based at the Geiger Air
Base in Spokane WA. After his honorable discharge
John attended OSU for two years then received his
Bachelors Degree in Veterinarian Science from the
University of Il. in 1959, and his D.V.M. in 1961.
John later earned his Education certificate in 1980
from Missouri State University.
John started his Veterinarian practice in Seminole
OK. in 1961–63, then Sulphur OK till 1965 and in
Grove until 1979. John then taught at Bixby High
School until his retirement in 1997.
John was united in marriage to Gayle Jagou in 1954
and to this union two children were born Mary Jo and
Robert Neal. After Gayle’s passing in 1976, John
married Byrkie Mayre Love in 1977.
John was an enthusiastic sports fan, especially for
the Chicago Bears. He loved the outdoors, hiking and
climbing- making it to the top of Longs Peak in CO
and Wheeler Peak in NM. He also enjoyed public
speaking and was an avid reader.
John was a member of the First United Methodist
Church in Fairland, OK, where he served as Finance
Chair for ten years, The Oklahoma Veterinary
Association, a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge
in Atlanta, IL #165 and the Oklahoma and Delaware
County Retired Educators Associations.

John served on the Grove School Board for six years
and received several recognition plaques for his
support of students in 4-H and FFA.
John received numerous citations and awards for his
dedication to the teaching of the sciences and
working with the science fair. He was a
teacher–sponsor for a student finalist in the
International Science and Engineering Fairs in 1987
and 1989 to Pittsburg , PA and Puerto Rico.
He was Bixby Schools Teacher of the Year in 1985,
OACA Academic Coach of the year 1992 and received
Academic Coaches Achievement Award State Runner –Up
Division II 1990.
John was preceded in death by his parents, wife
Gayle Horn and daughter Mary Jo Kennedy. He is
survived by his wife Byrkie Horn of the home, son
Robert Neal Horn of Welch, OK, two grandchildren
Kelsey Jordan Kennedy and Kaci Danielle Kennedy, one
step grandson Cade Kennedy and great granddaughter
Skylar Jo Kennedy.
Graveside services were held on Friday, May 15, 2015
at Olympus North Cemetery in Grove, Oklahoma with
Reverend Shannon Rodenberg officiating. Memorial
donations can be made to the First United Methodist
Church in Fairland, Oklahoma.
