Logan County Arts brings “FUN!” to its June show
Opens June 4

[May 23, 2015]  LINCOLN - Logan County Arts aims to put a smile on the faces of gallery goers with their June show. The group exhibit, entitled “Fun!” will open with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 4 at the Lincoln Art Institute, 112 S. McLean St, Lincoln, next to the Post Office.

In addition to the reception, the gallery will be open for the Pigs and Swigs weekend on Friday, June 5 from 5 to 10 p.m., Saturday, June 6 from 11a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday, June 7 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

As usual, the group chose the Fun theme not to restrict or limit the artist, but to provide a springboard for individual creativity. Fun can be incorporated in the subject matter, the process of creation or even the way the work is displayed, but fun must definitely be included somehow.

There is a common misconception that if art is to be taken seriously, it must be serious, and a lot of contemporary art can be difficult to understand or even confrontational. However, when LCA members were asked to name an artist who incorporated fun in his or her work, the answers included Warhol’s poking fun at American consumerism, Picasso’s amusing ceramics, and Matisse’s tendency to get a little crazy with his colors. Also cited by fellow members were LCA artist Kerry Rolewitz’s whimsical figure renderings and Moses Pinkerton’s flowing style, known to all Lincolnites familiar with his “Cow in the Corn” sculpture.

The Fun! exhibit will include new works by both these artists. Other artists participating in the show include Sheralyn Bolton, Margie Douglas, Mitch Douglas, Jason Hoffman, Pam Moriearty, Nancy Rollings Saul, Cody Sparks and Rob Swofford. After the opening weekend, the show will be available for viewing until July 6 by chance or appointment. Visitors may ring the doorbell, and if curator Moses Pinkerton is available he will open the gallery. For an appointment, people may call Pinkerton at 217-651-8355.

Also available at the “Fun!” opening will be information on the July, 2015 Douglas Family exhibit, featuring artworks and presentations by several members of this multitalented family.
