Obituary
SAN ANTONIO, TX - Marguerite “Reto” Koehnle Smith,
96, passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2015 in San
Antonio after a brief illness.
She was born July 23, 1918 on a farm in Lincoln to
Ralph and Della (Seidel) Koehnle, the middle of five
daughters. She attended business school in Chicago
after graduating from high school then moved back to
Lincoln where she worked as a secretary in the high
school principal’s office. It was at this point in
her life that she met her future husband, Robert
Gough Smith, a teacher, who was from Belvidere.
She and Bob were married on September 5, 1946 in
Rome, Georgia prior to Bob relocating to Florida in
order to accept a position at Florida State
University in Tallahassee. The couple lived in
Florida for several years and welcomed the birth of
their first daughter, Kim Lee, in 1948. The family
moved several times to the Dallas area and also to
Nacogdoches, TX, where they welcomed a second
daughter, Karen Dell “Dusty” in 1954. They lived in
Corpus Christi, TX and in Garland, TX until Bob
passed away in 1978. After his death, Marguerite, or
“Reto” as she preferred, moved in with her youngest
daughter and lived with her family until her death.
Reto was an exceptional mother and grandmother who
loved to cook, take care of the household and
socialize with family and friends. She enjoyed
gardening and reading the paper, and would work the
Daily Crossword puzzle every day. Throughout her
life she had dogs, cats and birds and loved animals
and wildlife. She always had an extra chair/plate at
the dinner table for anyone needing a good meal and
was welcoming to all who knew her.
Reto is preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and
Della Koehnle; husband of 32 years Robert Gough
Smith; sisters Anna-Marie Warlow (Stan), Fredonna
Millard (Gerald) and Marcella Wible (Don). She is
survived by her daughters Kim Lee Mrazek (Ron) of
Corpus Christi; Karen “Dusty” Ayala (Ruben) of San
Antonio; sister Dorothy Jean Vinson (Doug) of
Dallas; nieces Diane Clark (Chili) and Kathy Smith
(Steve) of Dallas; nephews Ralph Warlow of Dallas
and Keith Millard (Cindy) of Nacogdoches; cousin
Donald Hackl of Dallas; granddaughters Sarah Marquez
(Isaac) and Rebecca Ayala of San Antonio;
great-grandson Gabriel Marquez of San Antonio. |
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be
made to the Humane Society of San Antonio, The
Animal Defense League or the SPCA.
