[May 29, 2015]  MOUNT PULASKI - Monday was a picture-perfect Memorial Day at Steenbergen Cemetery in rural Mount Pulaski.

What is known as the "Avenue of Flags" is always a breath-taking sight at Steenbergen Cemetery and people from all over travel to the beautiful cemetery nestled atop the hill. Boy Scout Troop 122 spent the night before at the cemetery guarding the flags. However, due to an overnight rainstorm and heavy winds, several flags managed to come up missing, according to Joe Lucas.

Services are always held in the small Steenbergen Memorial Chapel and usually the overflow crowd gathers outside to hear the speakers and the amazing singing voice of John Buckles. Buckles' beautiful rendition of "This is Worth Fighting For" is always something to look forward to on this day. The Mount Pulaski High School Band also made the trip to the country to play patriotic music.

Keynote speaker, Retired MSgt. Chuck McCue, was also on hand here to speak, and again remind us to be thoughtful of those family members who have lost loved ones. As always Memorial Day is about remembering those who gave their lives for this great country and for that ultimate sacrifice we honor them.
