It's always our first official
taste of the Holidays that are to come, the Zonta Turkey Dinner. The
dinner was held this past Sunday.
Some years the weather is simply frightful with cold winds, gloom
and rain that sends people outside scurrying. This year was a
perfect calm upper 60's with the sun shining and everyone strolled
in and out greeting one another in leisure. But no matter the
weather, it is cheery inside as friends and family sit down to
commune over a hot fragrant meal. The dinner is always a huge
success.
On this day, a steady line picked up a tray and headed to the
cafeteria or picked up a to-go-bag of the full turkey dinner with
all the sides and trimmings you expect, and desserts galore to pick
from to top it all.
It is the largest fundraiser by the group with most of the funds
raised a direct benefit to our community.
Leslie Wilmert said that one third of the funds go to global causes
through Zonta International. After that funds go to support our
community with the emphasis on scholarships for those who are
pursuing a health related careers.
Each year the Zonta's also reach out and support numerous other
needs in the community. In the past they have been assisted the Head
Start Program, provided supplies for Sojourn to assist victims of
domestic violence, and the library has received funds.
Judy Awe who was selling tickets said that the coming year's
projects have not been voted on yet, but the information would be
released when it has been decided.
Hosted at Lincoln Community High School, school cafeteria staff
direct and also work in the kitchen with the Zonta's preparing the
wonderful meal that hundreds look forward to eating on the first
Sunday in November.
