 At a presentation on October 21, Flubacker was recognized in front
of her colleagues. She received a certificate commending her for
being an "Extraordinary Nurse." The certificate reads: "In deep
appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly
meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people." She
was also given a beautiful and meaningful sculpture called “A
Healer’s Touch,” hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in
Africa.
Flubacker is a registered nurse in the ALMH acute care department.
She has been with ALMH since July 2014 and was nominated by a family
member of one of her patients. The nomination stated, “She treated
my family member like he was one of her own. He referred to her as
his second favorite nurse in the world, topped only by his
daughter.”
"I am grateful to receive this award, especially because the
nomination came from a patient’s family member. I had developed a
special connection with this patient during his final days, and I am
appreciative that the family believed I made a difference in his
life. This award reminds me that I am able to have a positive impact
on others. And it reminds me how important nurses are. I feel very
fortunate to be in a profession that can provide such a sense of
purpose,” said Flubacker.
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA, and
was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes.
Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of
Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not
uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family
received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of
thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of
their patients and patient families.

Any nurse at ALMH can be nominated for the award. Nomination forms are available
throughout ALMH and on www.ALMH.org. Twice annually, an ALMH nurse is selected
by the ALMH Nursing Shared Governance Council to receive The DAISY Award. Other
nominated individuals nominated this fall were Cindi Layendecker (OB), Gary
Auten (ED), Jessica Schieffer (OB), Derek Storck (ED), Heather Callahan (Acute
Care), Jennifer Bowers (ED), Julie Sauer (Acute Care), Anne Sydney (ED), Nathan
Buss (Acute Care), and Teresa Heidbreder (Acute Care).
ALMH Director of Nursing Jeanne Dennis said, “It’s important that our nurses
know their work is highly valued, and The DAISY Foundation provides us a way to
do that. We are proud to be part of the Daisy Award program and recognize Morgan
as a true asset to the patients of Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.”
