[October 09, 2015]  Oct 8 (The Sports Xchange) - San Jose Sharks forward Raffi Torres offered an apology on Thursday for a hit during a preseason game that led to a 41-game suspension.

Torres decided not to appeal the longest suspension in NHL history for a hit on another player. He delivered an illegal check to the head of Anaheim Ducks forward Jakob Silfverberg on Saturday and was suspended on Monday.

"I am disappointed I have put myself in a position to be suspended again," Torres said in his apology to the Sharks and to Silfverberg issued through the team. "I'm extremely thankful that he wasn't seriously injured as a result of the play."

Torres is no stranger to disciplinary action. He was suspended for 21 games in 2012 for a hit and for the final six games of the playoffs in 2013 for a hit to the head. He also was suspended for two games in January 2012 and April 2011.

Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said the team supports the NHL's ruling.

"While we do not believe there was any malicious intent, this type of hit is unacceptable and has no place in our game," Wilson said.

"There is a difference between playing hard and crossing the line and there is no doubt, in this instance, Raffi crossed that line. We're very thankful that Jakob was not seriously injured as a result of this play."
