In August, Logan County Board members voted unanimously to
establish a Veteran's Burial Assistance Commission. A fund would be
created and a commission set up that would consider providing up to
$600 for burial of veterans that meet service criteria and income
qualifications.
County Board Chairman David Hepler recommended appointing Michelle
Barr and Major Jason Coble to the Veteran's Burial Assistance
Commission and the board gave its unanimous approval.
Then in September another veteran support program was brought before
the board. The county will partner with local veteran
representatives who would administer an emergency fund.
Again, a commission would be formed. The use of funds would be
decided by the commission and would be used to aid rare occasion
type needs; it would not be used as a repeat resource.
Currently the board plans to fund the Veteran Emergency Contingency
Fund with .03 percent property tax levy. The question would be put
to voters on the next ballot. If the referendum would pass, the
first funding by property tax levy would be available in 2018.

Lincoln VFW Post Commander Michelle Ramlow agreed to coordinate
contacting all the local veteran organizations to see who would like
to partner into the commission for the administration of the
emergency contingency funds.
Commander Ramlow said that there are 2,217 veterans in Logan County receiving
some type of benefit and said that a Veteran's Assistance Commission (VAC) would
provide aid to those who may qualify for, and need assistance with services not
provided by other agencies, such as V.A. home loans and V.A. health benefits.
Ramlow said that on October 15, all local veteran's organizations will meet to
discuss the formation a Veteran's Assistance Commission and if at least two of
the organizations are in favor of forming a VAC, a budget would be prepared for
submission to the Logan County Board by March.
