NHL roundup: Jones continues strong start for Sharks

NEWARK -- Goaltender Martin Jones made 31 saves to lead San Jose Sharks to a 2-1 shootout win over the New Jersey Devils on Friday night.

Jones set the Sharks franchise record for consecutive scoreless minutes at 234:39. He had entered the game with a 178:11 shutout streak, only having yielded one goal in his three previous starts. That goal occurred 1:49 into San Jose's season opener, a 5-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center on Oct. 7.

Left winger Patrick Marleau scored in regulation for San Jose, which improved to 4-0-0. The Sharks are one of four unbeaten teams in the NHL, along with Montreal, Minnesota and Detroit.

Center Joe Pavelski and defenseman Brent Burns scored in the shootout.

On the other end of the spectrum is New Jersey, which fell to 0-3-1.

Center Adam Henrique scored for New Jersey.

Maple Leafs 6, Blue Jackets 3

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Toronto, losers of its first three games, gained strength en route to a win over Columbus at Nationwide Arena, earning its first victory of the season.
 


Leo Komarov scored two goals, while Jake Gardiner, James Van Riemsdyk, Nazem Kadri and Joffrey Lupul also for the Maple Leafs. The win was the first for the Maple Leafs under new coach Mike Babcock.

Boone Jenner, Nick Foligno and Scott Hartnell scored for the Blue Jackets, off to the worst start in franchise history at 0-5-0.

Hurricanes 5, Red Wings 3

DETROIT -- Kris Versteeg and Eric Staal had a goal and two assists each to lead Carolina to its first win of the season, over Detroit at Joe Louis Arena.

Brock McGinn got his first career goal, in his first NHL game, and had an assist, while Justin Faulk and Chris Terry also scored for Carolina. Cam Ward made 17 saves.

Gustav Nyquist, Riley Sheahan and Teemu Pulkkinen scored for Detroit. Jimmy Howard made 31 saves.

Jets 3, Flames 1

WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Dustin Byfuglien scored a highlight-reel goal with just 1:28 left in the third period to spark Winnipeg to a triumph over Calgary.

Blake Wheeler and Bryan Little also scored for the Jets.

The Flames got their only goal from Markus Backlund, who notched his first of the season early in the opening period.

Blues 4, Canucks 3

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Alex Steen scored on a pretty second-period passing play and added an assist as St. Louis snapped a two-year losing streak against Vancouver.

Jori Lehtera, Kyle Brodziak and Robert Bortuzzo also scored for the Blues. Vladimir Tarasenko added two assists.

Brandon Sutter (shorthanded), Jared McCann and Daniel Sedin scored for Vancouver.

Avalanche 3, Ducks 0

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Reto Berra earned his second career shutout in his first start of the season as Colorado defeated Anaheim at the Honda Center.

Berra made 35 saves in his second consecutive appearance. The shutout extended Berra's streak of consecutive scoreless minutes to 164 over two seasons.

Nathan MacKinnon, Jack Skille and John Mitchell scored for Colorado.

Kings 2, Wild 1 (OT)

LOS ANGELES -- Anze Kopitar scored his first goal of the season, lifting Los Angeles over Minnesota at Staples Center.

The Kings' Tyler Toffoli and the Wild's Mikko Koivu scored the regulation goals.

 



Kopitar delivered at 2:19 of the extra period, gathering a pass from Tanner Pearson and firing a winner past goaltender Darcy Kuemper as the Kings (1-3-1) ended a three-game skid.

Goalie Jonathan Quick stopped 25 of 26 shots for the Kings. Kuemper stopped 35 of 37 shots for the Wild.
