10/17/2015 MLB Note - New York Mets Harvey, Matt
RHP Matt Harvey will start Game 1 of the NLCS against Cubs
left-hander Jon Lester.
Harvey pitched seven scoreless innings in his only start against the
Cubs this season.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers Ryu, Hyun-Jin
LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu (shoulder surgery) has begun a throwing program and
is expected to be ready for spring training.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers McCarthy, Brandon
RHP Brandon McCarthy (Tommy John surgery) has begun a throwing
program. His return for is projected for some time early next
season.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers Peraza, Jose
2B-OF Jose Peraza missed the post-season with a hamstring injury. He
is expected to be ready for spring training.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers Kershaw, Clayton
LHP Clayton Kershaw led MLB in strikeouts (301, the first 300-K
season since 2002) and innings pitched (232 2/3). Everything the
Dodgers have been able to do -- and everything they hope to do in
the postseason -- is built on the dynamic duo at the front of their
rotation. That was never more true than it was this season.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers Puig, Yasiel
OF Yasiel Puig burst onto the scene in June 2013 with one of the
best opening months to a major league career in baseball history.
His dynamic talents remain capable of highlight-reel moments, but he
has not been able to sustain or refine those abilities. This season,
he was limited to 79 games due to repeated hamstring injuries. Even
when he was in the lineup, he performed well below expectations. His
batting average (.255) and OPS (.758) took considerable drops again
this season.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers Seager, Corey
SS Corey Seager was promoted in September, and a finger injury
sustained by Jimmy Rollins brought more playing time than
anticipated. Seager started 25 of the Dodgers' final 30
regular-season games and made a seamless transition to the big
leagues, batting .337 and reaching base in his first 21 major league
starts (a Los Angeles franchise record). Heading into the playoffs,
Seager had wrested the job as the Dodgers' primary shortstop from
Rollins -- something that wasn't supposed to happen until next
season.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers Grandal, Yasmani
C Yasmani Grandal said he has a "pre-op" consultation scheduled for
Tuesday and will have arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder the
next day if that is recommended. Grandal has been dealing with pain
in the shoulder since August and had just seven hits in his last 104
at-bats (including 1-fo-10 in the playoffs). "I'm looking forward to
not having to deal with this anymore."
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers Peralta, Joel
RHP Joel Peralta thought his career might be over in April and May
when he was close to having neck surgery. That eventually cleared
up, however, and Peralta pitched well over the final month of the
season. The 39-year-old reliever said he plans to play winter ball
and then return for another season at age 40 (his birthday is in
March). The Dodgers have a club option for $2.5 million in Peralta's
contract.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers Greinke, Zack
RHP Zack Greinke has refused to discuss his contract situation all
season. That continued following the Game 5 loss when he deflected
questions about whether he will exercise the opt-out clause in his
contract following the World Series. Reports Oct, 16 indicated
Greinke would, in fact, opt out. He said he "really can't think of
anything not positive to say about the whole experience" in three
seasons with the Dodgers. But he would likely draw multiple offers
of contract packages over $100 million if he becomes a free agent.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers Ethier, Andre
OF Andre Ethier is the longest-tenured Dodger and has made the
playoffs six times in his 10 years with the team. But he has fallen
short of the World Series each time. "I think every year is the best
shot," he said after the latest playoff defeat. "Honestly, I've been
asked that a lot lately, comparing some of the playoff teams I've
been on and it really is just a blur."
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers Johnson, Jim
RHP Jim Johnson was acquired from the Atlanta Braves at the trade
deadline as part of the Dodgers' three-team, 13-player swap. He was
expected to help solidify the Dodgers' bullpen but went 0-3 with a
10.13 ERA in 23 appearances for the Dodgers. He was designated for
assignment in order to clear a roster spot for RHP Brooks Brown who
was claimed on waivers from the Colorado Rockies.

MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Encarnacion, Edwin
DH Edwin Encarnacion left after seven innings for X-rays of a
swollen left middle finger. The X-rays were negative.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Price, David
LHP David Price, who starts Saturday, said teammate RF Jose Bautista
is "always on the fastball." Said Price, "There's a saying in
baseball, you can't sneak cheese past a rat. That's what all the
best hitters in baseball do, they sit on a fastball and they react
to a breaking ball. He does a really job with that." After a pause,
Price said, "I'm not calling Bautista a rat" and laughed.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Tulowitzki, Troy
SS Troy Tulowitzki went 0-for-4 and struck out twice. He is 2-for-25
in six postseason games. "I know it (shoulder) still bothers him,"
Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "But he's good enough to play
and he wants to play and he's gutting it out this time of year. I
tip my hat to him. He's been struggling with that a bit. He had a
big hit down in Texas to get us here." Tulowitzki suffered a cracked
scapula and bruised upper back muscles after a collision with Kelvin
Pillar on Sept. 12 and missed 19 games.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Estrada, Marco
RHP Marco Estrada yielded three runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings to
take the loss. "It was hard for me to get the ball down today,"
Estrada said. "I elevated it a lot more than I wanted to. I didn't
walk anybody because they're a pretty aggressive team. For the most
part when I did fall behind, I found myself back in the count. I've
got to do a better job of getting ahead and locating my fastball."
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Toronto Blue Jays Bautista, Jose
RF Jose Bautista had four plate appearances and did not put the ball
in play. He walked three times and struck out. Bautista had walked
only once in the first five postseason games.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Kansas City Royals Herrera, Kelvin
RHP Kelvin Herrera threw nine pitches, all strikes, in a perfect
seventh. He struck out two. "I had good command," Herrera said. "I
tried to throw the ball down."
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Kansas City Royals Hosmer, Eric
1B Eric Hosmer contributed a run-producing double in the eighth, but
his laser to right just missed by inches of clearing the fence. "I
thought it was a good chance of getting out," Hosmer said. "I
actually thought it hit the back wall and came in. That's baseball,
a game of inches."
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Kansas City Royals Cain, Lorenzo
CF Lorenzo Cain singled in the third inning, extending his
postseason hitting streak to 10 games. The club record is OF Amos
Otis, 11 straight from Game 2 of the 1978 ALCS to Game 5 of the 1980
World Series.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Kansas City Royals Escobar, Alcides
SS Alcides Escobar led off the game with a first-pitch double. He
also doubled on the first pitch he saw in third inning. "When I
swing at the first pitch, we're like 40-19," Escobar said. "Everyone
says just continue to swing the bat." He is the first shortstop to
collect two doubles in a postseason game since the Yankees' Derek
Jeter in Game 1 of the 2010 ALCS. It was Escobar's ninth multi-hit
postseason game.
-----------------------------------------------
MLB Note - Kansas City Royals Madson, Ryan
RHP Ryan Madson yielded a one-out single to Josh Donaldson and
walked Jose Bautista in the eighth before getting out of the jam. "I
knew it was the top of the order and I had to make good pitches,"
Madson said. "I was struggling mechanically and that took over more
than who was up. It wasn't the lineup. It was more myself. I was
struggling a little bit with mechanics, something's not right.
That's why a couple of balls got away from me again. It seems like
the more I try the worse it gets. We've got to figure something out.
The control is not there. The movement is there. That's what I
relied on today is get the ball over the plate and rely on that
movement to get a couple of ground balls."
