The Kansas City Star reported that an outbreak of chickenpox has hit
the Royals clubhouse and at least two players -- outfielder Alex
Rios and All-Star reliever Kelvin Herrera -- are infected.
Rios and Herrera will be quarantined and out of action for about two
weeks, as the Royals try to contain this illness.

New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira is on crutches and will
be out of the lineup for at least two more weeks while a bone bruise
heals.
Teixeira underwent tests on Tuesday that showed his sore right shin
does not have a broken bone but rather a serious bruise.

The Yankees called up former All-Star closer and Rookie of the Year
Andrew Bailey. Bailey returns to the major leagues at age 31 for the
first time since the 2013 season when suffered a shoulder injury
with the Boston Red Sox.

Cuban infielder Hector Olivera was called up to the major leagues
for the first time by the Atlanta Braves.
Four months after defecting from his native country, Olivera signed
a six-year, $62.5 million contract that included a $28 million
signing bonus with the Los Angeles Dodgers, who dealt him to Atlanta
in July as part of a three-team, 13-player trade that included the
Miami Marlins.

The Toronto Blue Jays traded veteran outfielder Chris Heisey to the
Los Angeles Dodgers for a player to be named and cash
considerations.
Heisey was released by the Dodgers on Aug. 7 and signed as a free
agent with the Blue Jays on Aug. 13.

For the second time in 25 years, the commissioner of Major League
Baseball denied a request to reinstate Shoeless Joe Jackson.
Rob Manfred responded to an appeal from the Shoeless Joe Jackson
Museum in South Carolina with a denial to "reopen" the matter of the
banned for accepted $5,000 to throw the 1919 World Series along with
seven others.

Alex Gordon was activated from the disabled list and joined the
expanded roster of the Kansas City Royals.
The All-Star left fielder missed seven weeks with a groin strain.

The Seattle Mariners added right-handers Jose Ramirez and Tony Zych,
infielder Shawn O'Malley and outfielder Stefan Romero as rosters
