NEW YORK -- Rookie right-hander Luis Severino pitched into the seventh inning for the first time while Alex Rodriguez, Brian McCann and Greg Bird homered as the New York Yankees opened a 10-game homestand with a 5-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Severino (3-2) won his third straight start despite tying a career-high allowing seven hits. He took a shutout into the sixth before allowing Evan Longoria's 18th home run.

After getting beat by Longoria, Severino walked shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera and gave up a single to James Loney. He needed only three pitches to escape his biggest jam of the night as he fanned Kevin Kiermaier on a high fastball.

Mariners 11, A's 8

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Stefen Romero and Kyle Seager hit two-run homers, powering Seattle over Oakland at the O.co Coliseum.

The A's took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on Danny Valencia's third career grand slam and led 5-1 after two innings. But Seattle scored six runs in the third and two more in the fourth on Romero's first home run of the season.

Seager went 3-for-4 with a double to go with his home run, drove in three and scored three times. Romero was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and scored twice. Logan Morrison went 3-for-4 with a double, drove in two runs and scored once.

Dodgers 8, Padres 4

SAN DIEGO -- The Los Angeles Dodgers slugged five home runs to defeat San Diego.

Mike Bolsinger (6-3) won his third straight start but for the first time since July 29. Bolsinger, who pitched five innings and allowed three runs on two hits and two walks, spent the last month in Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Los Angeles rallied twice in the game and then pulled away with a five-run sixth. That inning included a two-run, pinch-hit homer by Justin Ruggiano, a two-run shot by Adrian Gonzalez and a solo blast from Chase Utley. The Dodgers' other homers, both solo, came from Carl Crawford in the first and Scott Schebler in the second.

Angels 5, Rangers 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- C.J. Cron drove in five runs with a single, double and triple, leading the Los Angeles Angels past Texas.

It was a big win for the Angels in the first game of a critical series against the Rangers, who lead the Angels by 2 1/2 games in the race for the American League's second wild-card spot. The Minnesota Twins, who lost Friday, are 1 1/2 games back.

While much of the Angels offense has struggled over the last month, Cron has been a bright spot. With his three hits Friday, he's hitting .341 with 17 RBIs over his last 25 games.

Pirates 9, Cardinals 3

ST. LOUIS -- J.A. Happ checked St. Louis on three hits over seven shutout innings as Pittsburgh earned a much-needed win in the opener of a National League Central showdown.

Happ walked none and fanned eight as he improved to 4-1 since Pittsburgh acquired him from Seattle on July 31. He entered the game with a 1-8 record and 6.79 ERA in 10 prior starts against the Cardinals while pitching for Houston and Philadelphia.

The Pirates snapped a four-game losing streak and pulled within 5 1/2 games of St. Louis, which lost for just the third time in 12 games.

Marlins, 6, Mets 5, 11 innings

MIAMI -- Martin Prado hit a two-out, walk-off RBI double down the right-field line leading Miami past the New York Mets.

Christian Yelich scored from first on Prado's career-high fifth hit of the game.

Reliever Eric O'Flaherty, who has struggled mightily since he was acquired, gave up the winning hit.

Rockies 2, Giants 1

DENVER -- Back-to-back solo home runs in the first proved to be enough run support for Colorado starter Jorge De La Rosa as he stymied floundering San Francisco.

Carlos Gonzalez hit his 36th homer, and one pitch later, Nolan Arenado belted his 35th. Those were the only runs Giants starter Chris Heston allowed in 5 2/3 innings.

But De La Rosa was better. He limited San Francisco to one run in seven innings, allowing six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.

White Sox 12, Royals 0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Adam Eaton and Tyler Flowers each belted three-run homers as Chicago thumped Kansas City. Eaton and Alexei Ramirez each had four hits, matching their career highs.

Eaton hit a three-run shot in the five-run eighth. Immediately after Eaton went deep off Jeremy Guthrie, Jose Abreu homered.

The 17-hit offensive outburst made it easy for John Danks to pick up his seventh victory, but his first since Aug. 1.

Astros 8, Twins 0

HOUSTON -- Collin McHugh carried a shutout into the eighth inning and rode a jolting display of power in Houston's win over Minnesota.

Coming off a stellar month in which he posted a 1.89 ERA over five quality starts, McHugh scattered seven hits and one walk over 7 2/3 innings while recording six strikeouts.

Colby Rasmus and Hank Conger provided the thump for the Astros. Conger matched his career high of five RBIs, which welcomed back George Springer (1-for-4) from a prolonged stint on the disabled list.

Nationals 5, Braves 2, 10 innings

WASHINGTON -- Pinch-hitter Michael A. Taylor blasted a three-run homer with no outs in the last of the 10th off Brandon Cunniff to give Washington the win.

Taylor's homer scored Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman. It was the first career walk-off homer for Taylor, who has been hobbled by a sore leg and missed the past few games.

Washington began the day six games back of the first-place New York Mets in the National League East.

Indians 8, Tigers 1

DETROIT -- Jerry Sands hit a two-run homer and triggered a four-run fifth with a leadoff triple while Josh Tomlin began the game with five innings of one-hit ball to spark surging Cleveland over sinking Detroit.

Tomlin, subbing for injured Corey Kluber, gave up a leadoff single to Anthony Gose in the first but held Detroit hitless until giving up a leadoff double in the sixth.

Tomlin got 14 Detroit batters to hit the first or second pitch he threw. Tomlin gave up four hits, walked one, struck out five and threw 104 pitches in his third career complete game.

Orioles 10, Blue Jays 2

TORONTO -- Chris Davis hit two home runs and had three RBIs as Baltimore routed Toronto.

It was the second straight two-homer game for the Orioles first baseman.

Adam Jones added a two-run shot for the Orioles and Matt Wieters hit a solo shot to support winning pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez.

Cubs, 14, Diamondbacks 5

CHICAGO -- Addison Russell went 2-for-3 with two home runs while Anthony Rizzo added a grand slam in an eight-run fifth inning to lead Chicago over Arizona.

Chicago starter Jon Lester worked five innings in a game that lasted 3 hours, 40 minutes to earn his first win since Aug. 13.

Rizzo was 2-for-3 with four RBIs and Javier Baez went 3-for-4, including his first homer of the season.

Red Sox 7, Phillies 5

BOSTON -- The new and improved Joe Kelly won his seventh straight start to lift Boston over.

Kelly, banished to Triple-A in June with a 2-5 record, has returned as a different pitcher and Friday night turned in six strong innings as the Red Sox won the opener of a three-game series between two last-place teams.

Xander Bogaerts had two hits and two RBIs and Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a solo homer and scored twice sparked the Red Sox offense.

Reds-Brewers postponed

CINCINNATI -- The series opener between Cincinnati and Milwaukee was postponed due to rain.

The game will be made up Saturday as part of a day-night doubleheader
