[September 12, 2015]  Sept 12 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Friday's Major League Baseball games:

Rangers 4, A's 0

Colby Lewis was perfect through seven innings as the Texas Rangers opened a 10-game homestand with a 4-0 victory over Oakland on Friday.

Lewis did not allow a base runner until Danny Valencia lined a double to left on a 0-1 pitch to open the eighth inning but he still finished with a complete-game two-hitter, striking out four and not allowing a walk.

Texas, which had been shut out in its last two games, gave Lewis the only runs he needed in the first inning against Oakland starter Jesse Chavez.

Mitch Moreland drilled a two-run double to spot Lewis a 2-0 lead. Odor followed that with a double to left to score Moreland.

Twins 6, White Sox 2

Trevor Plouffe went 3-for-5 with two home runs to lead Minnesota over Chicago.

Torii Hunter added two hits and two outfield assists for Minnesota, which remained one game behind Texas in the race for the American League's second wild-card berth. Ervin Santana posted his third consecutive victory for the Twins.

Blue Jays 11, Yankees 5

Russell Martin homered twice and drove in four runs as Toronto beat New York to open a four-game series at Yankee Stadium between the AL East front-runners.

Josh Donaldson and Justin Smoak hit two-run homers during a five-run first inning as the Blue Jays collected 16 hits and pushed their lead over the Yankees to a season-high 2 1/2 games.

Pirates 6, Brewers 3

Chris Stewart had three hits and three RBIs and Charlie Morton pitched six strong inning as Pittsburgh ended a seven-game losing streak against Milwaukee.

Stewart's two-run single capped a three-run fourth inning and put the Pirates ahead for good, 3-2. He added an RBI single in the sixth. Stewart tied a career high with his third three-hit game of the season and fifth of his nine-year career.

Mets 5, Braves 1

Yoenis Cespedes was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and his mammoth two-run homer in the ninth inning capped a New York win that gave the Mets an 8 1/2-game lead in the National League East with 21 games to play.

Cespedes has homered in seven of his past 10 games and has 15 home runs and 39 RBIs in 38 games since being acquired by the Mets from the Boston Red Sox.

Marlins 2, Nationals 1

Bryce Harper struck out swinging three times and stranded four runners as Washington, fading fast in the National League East race, lost to Miami.

Angels 3, Astros 2

Jered Weaver gave up two runs in six innings, helping Los Angeles to a critical win over Houston.

Weaver made only one mistake in the game -- a two-run homer by Carlos Gomez in the sixth inning. Kole Calhoun's two-out, two-run single in the second inning was the difference for the Angels.

Rays 8, Red Sox 4

Tampa Bay rallied for five runs in the eighth inning to top Boston.

The Red Sox had rallied for a 4-3 lead in the sixth after chasing Rays starter Chris Archer, but Tampa Bay answered in the eighth with three straight hits off Junichi Tuzawa.

Cubs 5, Phillies 1 (first game)

Jake Arrieta pitched eight strong innings to run his winning streak to eight games as Chicago beat Philadelphia in the opener of a double-header.

Arrieta (19-6) allowed one run and six hits while striking out seven and walking two. He leads the major leagues in victories and is the first Cubs pitcher to win 19 games since Jon Lieber went 20-6 in 2001.

Cubs 7, Phillies 3 (second game)

Kyle Schwarber homered twice and drove in three runs as Chicago completed a doubleheader sweep of Philadelphia.

Kris Bryant also homered and drove in three runs for the Cubs, who won for the seventh time in eight games. Schwarber hit a solo homer in the first and a two-run homer in the second off Alec Asher, giving Chicago a 3-0 lead.

Orioles 14, Royals 8

Nolan Reimold and Steve Clevenger both hit grand slams, and Manny Machado added a solo shot in a 10-run eighth inning that carried Baltimore over Kansas City.

Kansas City took an early 3-0 lead and tried to hold on as Baltimore cut the lead to one three different times before the Orioles turned it around in that eighth.

Diamondbacks 12, Dodgers 4

Welington Castillo, Paul Goldschmidt and Nick Ahmed homered, and Robbie Ray pitched five scoreless innings to lift Arizona over Los Angeles.

Castillo hit a three-run homer in a four-run first inning and Goldschmidt and Ahmed had two-run homers in a six-run second for a quick 10-0 lead.

Giants 9, Padres 1

Jake Peavy posted his first win over the team that drafted him 16 years ago as San Francisco defeated San Diego.

Peavy limited his former team to two hits in seven innings. He gave up a second-inning home run to Justin Upton and then not another hit until Upton singled with two outs in the seventh.

Rockies 4, Mariners 2

Dustin Garneau broke a scoreless tie with a three-run homer in the seventh inning and Colorado team mate Chad Bettis threw seven scoreless innings against Seattle.

Garneau's second career home run snapped a string of 24 consecutive scoreless innings by Mariners pitchers.

Cardinals 2, Reds 2, (suspended, eight innings)

The Cincinnati-St Louis game was suspended in the eighth inning because of rain with the score tied 2-2.

The game will resume at Great American Ball Park on Saturday before the regularly scheduled game.

Indians v Tigers (postponed, rain)

The Cleveland Indians-Detroit Tigers game scheduled for Friday night at Progressive Field was postponed because of heavy rain in the Cleveland area. (Editing by John O'Brien)
