Obituary
Verna Wilhelmina Ommen, 103, of Lincoln, and
formerly of Jacksonville, died Thursday, September
10, 2015, at St. Clara’s Manor in Lincoln. She was
born August 12, 1912, in Arenzville, the daughter of
Frederick and Laura Lovekamp Fricke. Verna married
Marvin Ommen on October 26, 1935, near Chapin, and
he preceded her in death on June 16, 1993.
Verna is survived by four children, Wilma (Robert)
Miller of Lincoln, Byron (Carolyn) Ommen of
Carrollton, Lucille (dec. Dean) Hannel of
Jacksonville, and Sharon (John) Tarvin of
Bloomington; 11 grandchildren, Janis (John) Bloom of
Bloomington, Steven Miller of Pekin, Douglas (Ann)
Miller of Lake in the Hills, Jeffrey Miller of
Lincoln, David (fiancé, Janet Proffitt) Hannel of
Jacksonville, Lori (Randy) White of Clearwater,
Florida, Kevin (Tricia) Hannel of Bloomington, Tony
(Nikki) Ommen of Bolingbrook, Shelly Ommen of
Carrollton, Heather (Travis) Young of Brentwood,
Tennesse, and Kourtney (Cody) Erbes of Bloomington;
20 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren,
and one sister, Mildred Fricke of Jacksonville. She
was preceded in death by one infant son, Donald Lee
Ommen, one sister, Lorna Fricke, and three brothers,
Orval Fricke, Hubert Fricke (surviving wife, Barb of
Chapin), and Kenneth Fricke.
Verna was born at home on the family farm near
Arenzville. She attended small country schools and
was offered a scholarship to attend Illinois State
Normal University following her 8th grade
graduation. As Verna married and became a mother she
devoted her time to supporting her husband and
raising her family. Her dedication to her family
continued throughout her life as she became a
grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved
attending her grandchildren’s and
great-grandchildren’s events and was always there
with a smile and her loving support.
An accomplished seamstress, Verna enjoyed crocheting
and quilting and was proud to have made an afghan
for each of her grandchildren. Verna also enjoyed
gardening and canning, and was an excellent cook and
pianist and played for many special occasions. She
was a member of Salem Lutheran Church and Ladies
Aid. |
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday,
September 12, 2015, at Salem Lutheran Church, with burial at
Grace Cemetery near Chapin. The family will meet friends one
hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers,
memorials are suggested to Salem Lutheran Church and School.
