[September 18, 2015]  PITTSBURGH -- Anthony Rizzo's two-run home run, his 30th of the season, started a six-run fifth inning as the Chicago Cubs rallied for a 9-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday afternoon to take three of four games in the series between National League contenders.

The Cubs turned a 4-3 deficit into a 9-4 lead with the fifth-inning outburst that included a two-run double by left-handed reliever Clayton Richard and RBI singles by Addison Russell and Tommy La Stella.

The Cubs got within two games of the Pirates for the first wild-card berth in the National League.

Kris Bryant had his second straight three-hit game and La Stella and Russell drove in two runs each and were two of four Chicago players with two hits along with Rizzo and Dexter Fowler.

Athletics 4, White Sox 2

CHICAGO -- Billy Butler hit a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning lead Oakland to a comeback victory over the Chicago White Sox.

With runners on first and third and one out, Butler hit a drive off Chicago closer David Robertson to the opposite field. Avisail Garcia jumped and got a glove on the ball, but the contact with the wall jarred the ball loose and it fell into the visiting bullpen.

Robertson has blown seven saves this season. Left-hander Sean Doolittle pitched the final two innings for the win.

Blue Jays 5, Braves 0

ATLANTA -- Marco Estrada scattered three hits over eight shutout innings and Toronto connected for three home runs while blanking Atlanta at Turner Field.

The Blue Jays got all the runs they needed in the fourth inning, when Edwin Encarnacion and Cliff Pennington hit long home runs to produce four runs. Josh Donaldson hit a solo homer -- his 39th -- in the ninth inning. Toronto has hit a league-leading 207 homers this season.

The losing pitcher was rookie Matt Wisler, who allowed four runs on nine hits in six innings. Wisler struck out three and walked two. Wisler has lost seven straight and has not won since July 26 at St. Louis.

Orioles 4, Rays 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Held to two hits and no runs in seven innings, Baltimore rallied for four runs on five hits in the eighth off Tampa Bay reliever Alex Colome, pulling out win at Tropicana Field.

Rays starter Matt Moore threw a gem in his best outing since returning from Tommy John surgery in July, but Colome --the Rays' best reliever since the All-Star break -- couldn't get out of the eighth, allowing five straight batters to reach with two outs.

The Orioles keep their slim wild-card hopes alive with the win, five games back of Houston, while the Rays are seven back with 16 games to play.

Marlins 6, Nationals 4

WASHINGTON -- Martin Prado scored twice and had two hits, including a two-run homer, and Justin Bour crushed a three-run shot as Miami beat Washington to dampen the post-season hopes of the defending division champs.

The Nationals, who had won four straight, are now eight games behind the idle New York Mets in the National League East with 16 games left. The Marlins have won three in a row and are 9-7 against Washington this year.

CLEVELAND -- Omar Infante had a single, double, home run and a career-high seven RBIs to lead Kansas City to a win over Cleveland at Progressive Field.

Infante hit a three-run home run in the second inning, a two-run double in the fifth inning and a two-run single in the seventh.

Right-hander Yordano Ventura pitched five innings to get the win. The loss went to right-hander Corey Kluber, who was making his first start since Aug. 29 due to a strained hamstring.

Cardinals 6, Brewers 3

MILWAUKEE -- Matt Carpenter finished a triple short of the cycle and Tommy Pham had three hits as St. Louis moved one step closer to the NL Central crown with a victory over Milwaukee at Miller Park.

Carpenter singled in the first, doubled in the third then hit a two-out, solo home run in the sixth to finish the three-game series at Milwaukee 8-for-13 with three doubles and two home runs.

Pham, the Cardinals' hero Wednesday night, picked up where he left off, tripling then doubling in his first two at-bats of the night. The rookie scored twice and drove in a pair of runs.

Rangers 8, Astros 2

ARLINGTON -- Texas have dramatically and forcefully seized control of the American League West division race in just four days, completing a pivotal sweep of Houston with a victory Thursday.

Down 1 1/2 games in the standings when the series began Monday, the Rangers opened up a 2 1/2-game lead after their four-game sweep.

Mitch Moreland was the hero against Houston again Thursday, with a three-run homer that gave him six RBIs in the series. Moreland hit a crucial two-run shot in Monday's series opener and drove in the game-winning run with a walk-off sacrifice fly in the second game.

Angels 11, Twins 8

MINNEAPOLIS -- Mike Trout hit two homers, including a second-inning grand slam, as the Los Angeles Angels dug out of an early five-run hole in a victory over Minnesota at Target Field.

Trout's slam erased a 5-0 Minnesota lead after one inning, giving the Angels a 6-5 advantage they would only build upon. He also hit a solo blast in the fourth, walked three times and scored three times.

The win moved the Angels to within one game of the Twins in the American League wild card standings and to within 2 1/2 of the slumping Houston Astros for the second wild card spot.
