LINCOLN
- If you recall, last Friday evening the area was subject to a heavy
rain, and lightning continued well through the night. But come dawn
Saturday, the skies were blue, and the air a little cooler, around
50 degrees. A perfect morning for the area's first Colon Cancer
Awareness 5K Run/Walk.

The second leading cause of death by cancer, survival of colon
cancer increases with early detection. Persons over 50 years of age
are advised to have a colonoscopy. A healthy diet high in fiber and
regular exercise also serve in cancer prevention. And annual stool
samples checking for blood can aid in early detection. The Logan
County Health Department offers test kits.
The Galen Marten family hosted the event with J.M. Abbott &
Associates, Ltd. as its sponsor to create awareness on the
importance of screenings to prevent colon cancer and increase
survivorship. A number of local businesses also contributed gifts
for fundraising. Proceeds of the event went to Colon Cancer Alliance
(CCA), who are an awareness, prevention and patient advocacy group.

Many of those who came out to the park on Saturday
morning for the run/walk are friends and family wishing to show
support for two-year survivor Joni Marten. Marten, who was diagnosed
with stage IV cancer in 2013 has undergone extensive chemotherapy
and two surgeries is doing well. To the joy of many, she joined the
run.
