[September 25, 2015]  Sept 24 (The Sports Xchange) - The Boston Red Sox promoted longtime club executive Mike Hazen to senior vice president/general manager on Thursday.

Hazen, 39, has served in various capacities during the past decade with the Red Sox. His duties have ranged from player acquisitions and evaluations to contract negotiations and scouting. He replaces Ben Cherington, who resigned in August

Kansas City Royals reliever Greg Holland will miss the rest of the season due to persistent arm troubles, the team announced.

Holland has been dealing with elbow issues all season and manager Ned Yost told reporters before Thursday's game that Holland has a significant tear in the ulnar collateral ligament.

Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado referred to Washington Nationals reliever Jonathan Papelbon as a coward after being plunked by a pitch in the ninth inning of Wednesday's game.

Machado hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning off Washington's Max Scherzer, a blast that gave Baltimore a 4-3 lead. When Machado came up to bat in the ninth, Papelbon drilled him in his left shoulder and both benches cleared.

Washington Nationals infielder Danny Espinosa has a hamstring injury that will keep him from playing for the remainder of the season.

Manager Matt Williams said Thursday that Espinosa, 28, has a slight tear that usually needs about four weeks of recovery time and the team didn't want to put him in danger of further injury.
