Curtis Granderson added a three-run bomb off J.J. Hoover putting the
Mets in position to clinch their first National League East title
since 2006 on Saturday afternoon with a victory over the Reds or a
Washington Nationals' loss.
Syndergaard was sharp, allowing two runs on four hits with 11
strikeouts and no walks. He retired 16 straight in one stretch.
Athletics 5, Giants 4
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Billy Burns hit a two-run homer, Billy Butler had
a solo shot and right-hander Sonny Gray pitched six solid innings,
leading Oakland to a victory against the San Francisco at the O.co
Coliseum.
The Giants remained eight games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in
the National League West but were eliminated from contention in the
wild-card race. The defending World Series champions' elimination
number in the division fell to two.
The A's were swept by San Francisco in a three-game series in July,
but they beat the Giants for the sixth straight time in Oakland.
Diamondbacks 6, Padres 3
SAN DIEGO -- A.J. Pollock had a career-high five RBIs to lead
Arizona over San Diego.
Pollock's second-inning grand slam highlighted his outburst.

setting a career high for wins. He allowed three runs (two earned),
four hits, with three walks. He struck out two in his 5 2/3 innings
of work as Arizona won for the third time in its last five games.
Angels 8, Mariners 4
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Albert Pujols and C.J Cron each hit a two-run
home run to lead the Los Angeles Angels to a win over Seattle at
Angel Stadium.
The Angels used their sixth victory in eight games to move within
half a game of the Houston Astros, who hold the American League's
second wild-card spot, while remaining five games behind the
first-place Texas Rangers in the American League West with nine to
play.
Pujols registered his 37th home run of the season and the 557th of
his career in the bottom of the first inning. Cron added his 15th in
the bottom of the seventh. Second baseman Johnny Giavotella added
two RBIs and center fielder Mike Trout led the Angels' 14-hit attack
with three hits.
Brewers 4, Cardinals 3
ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis saw its five-game winning streak end, but it
might have lost more than a game in a loss to Milwaukee.
Starting pitcher Carlos Martinez exited after facing three hitters
into the game. Carlos Martinez left after seven pitches with right
shoulder tightness. Martinez left the mound with his glove hand
covering his face.
Left fielder Khris Davis belted his 24th homer of the year to lead
off the ninth for Milwaukee off Trevor Rosenthal, the Cardinals'
eighth pitcher.
Rangers 6, Astros 2
HOUSTON -- Shin-Soo Choo continued his torrid month with a three-hit
game as Texas took a stranglehold on the American League West.
The Rangers won their eighth consecutive game against the Astros and
extended their lead in the division to 4 1/2 games. Houston fell to
4-13 against Texas this season and, with the division chase all but
over, have shifted their postseason hopes to fending off the Twins
and Angels for the second wild card in the American League.
Choo, who entered the series leading the AL in batting (.410),
on-base percentage (.539) and walks (19) this month, finished
3-for-5 with a two-run home run.
Indians 6, Royals 0
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Carlos Carrasco threw a one-hitter and Cleveland
smacked three home runs to beat Kansas City.
Alex Rios's seventh inning single with one out was the lone Kansas
City hit.

victory.
Marlins 12, Braves 11
MIAMI -- Jose Fernandez survived a rough first inning and became the
first major league pitcher to start his home career with a 17
straight wins.
Fernandez eclipsed the previous 16-0 record set by Johnny Allen
(1932-33) and LaMarr Hoyt (1980-82). But it wasn't easy for
Fernandez, who allowed five hits and four runs in the first inning.
Fortunately for the Marlins their offense bailed out Fernandez,
scoring four runs in the bottom of the first and three in the third
to take their first lead. Miami held on from there -- but barely.

winning the American League East with a 5-2 victory Friday night.

into the lower rows of the second deck in left field.
It was Olt's third home run in 59 at-bats with the White Sox but of
more significance it pushed the Yankees four games behind the
Toronto Blue Jays with nine games remaining.
Tigers 6, Twins 4
DETROIT -- Rajai Davis hit a tie-breaking two-run home run on a 3-2
pitch with two out in the eighth inning as Detroit stalled
Minnesota's drive for the second wild card berth.

wild card spot, and blew a 4-0 lead.

two before delivering a flat full-count slider that Davis drove the
other way over the right-field wall to cap the comeback.

innings. He retired the final 11 batters he faced.
Red Sox 7, Orioles 0
BOSTON -- Rich Hill pitched a two-hitter for his second major league

have been his 44th homer of the season with a man on.

single to Dariel Alvarez in the ninth.

inside-the-park grand slam among his two homers and five RBIs as the

Germany, grew up in Arizona and entered this year with just five big
league at-bats and was hitting .225 at game time. He now has five
homers this year.
The last inside-the-park grand slam in the majors was hit by Tampa
Bay's Randy Winn against the New York Yankees on Oct. 3, 1999. The
last time the Phillies had an inside-the-park grand slam was by Ted
Kazanski on Aug. 8, 1956, at the Polo Grounds against the New York
Giants.
Pirates 3, Cubs 2
CHICAGO - Pittsburgh extended its lead over Chicago for the top
National League wild card berth with a victory at Wrigley Field.

win and closer Mark Melancon struggled before recording is 51st
save.
