The Padres extended their major-league record of consecutive
scoreless innings to start the season to 30 before ending that
streak in a big way with a six-run fourth inning on their way to
spoiling the Rockies' home opener.
Story continued his amazing slugging at the outset of his career,
belting his fifth and sixth home runs. With home runs in four
consecutive games to start his career, Story tied a major-league
record held by Willie Mays in 1971, Mark McGwire (1998), Nelson Cruz
(2011) and Chris Davis (2013). Story also set a Rockies franchise
record with a home run in four straight games to start a season.
Story went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and now has seven homers.
Matt Kemp, who was 4-for-6 with four RBIs, and Melvin Upton Jr.
homered for the Padres, who had 18 hits Friday after managing just
11 hits while getting outscored 25-0 in three losses at home to the
Dodgers.
Indians 7, White Sox 1
CHICAGO -- Francisco Lindor went 2-for-4 and Carlos Santana and Yan
Gomes drove in two runs apiece as the Indians scored seven runs for
the second consecutive game.
Todd Frazier hit a solo home run to mark the only scoring for the
White Sox. Chicago managed only three hits during a blustery home
opener with temperatures hovering in the 30s.
Indians right-hander Danny Salazar (1-0) limited the White Sox to
one run on two hits in 5 1/3 innings
Tigers 4, Yankees 0
DETROIT -- Jordan Zimmermann pitched seven innings of two-hit
shutout ball while Miguel Cabrera drove in two runs with a solo home
run and a single to make the unbeaten Tigers' home opener a success.
Zimmermann (1-0), signed as a free agent from Washington, allowed
just three baserunners. He gave up singles in the third and fourth,
walked three and struck out three.
Relievers Justin Wilson and Kyle Ryan completed the three-hit
shutout with an inning apiece.
Mets 7, Phillies 2
NEW YORK -- Neil Walker delivered the tiebreaking run-scoring single
in the sixth inning and added an RBI single during a four-run
seventh inning as the defending National League champion New York
Mets routed Philadelphia in their home opener.
The Mets improved to 35-20 in home openers, including 5-3 since Citi
Field opened in 2009. The Phillies have been outscored 26-12 in
losing all four games this season.
The Mets, who fell to the Kansas City Royals in five games in the
World Series, received their National League champion rings in a
private ceremony Thursday. The celebration continued Friday during
pregame ceremonies that ended with a trio of former Mets -- Edgardo
Alfonzo, John Franco and Rusty Staub -- raising a flag honoring the
franchise's first pennant since 2000.
Orioles 6, Rays 1
BALTIMORE -- Chris Davis, Jonathan Schoop, Nolan Reimold and Manny
Machado all homered as Baltimore remained unbeaten with a victory
over Tampa Bay.

theirs in a four-run fifth that broke the game open.
Reimold and Machado gave the Orioles their first back-to-back homers
this season.
Pirates 6, Reds 5
CINCINNATI -- Starling Marte hit his first career grand slam to
erase a three-run deficit in the eighth inning helping Pittsburgh
remain undefeated with a victory over Cincinnati on a frigid and at
times snowy night at Great American Ball Park.
Ryan Vogelsong earned the victory for the Pirates, who are 4-0 to
start a season for the first time since 2003.
Both teams battled the elements, combining for five errors and four
hit batters. There also were a combined 18 runners stranded.
Cardinals 7, Braves 4
ATLANTA -- St. Louis clubbed three pinch-hit homers, including the
go-ahead shot from Alydmys Diaz in the eighth inning, to overcome a
four-run deficit and defeat Atlanta at Turner Field.
Diaz, a rookie from Cuba, hit the second pitch from reliever Eric
O'Flaherty (0-1) deep into the left field seats for his first career
homer.
Greg Garcia added some insurance with a solo pinch-hit homer against
John Gant in the ninth inning. Gant also allowed a solo homer to
right fielder Stephen Piscotty.
Red Sox 8, Blue Jays 7
TORONTO -- Brock Holt hit a grand slam in the sixth inning and
Boston overcame a five-run deficit to defeat Toronto.

year's American League MVP.

and five runs in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out four.

Brewers 6, Astros 4
MILWAUKEE -- Scooter Gennett, Chris Carter and Ryan Braun hit home
runs and Milwaukee hit the .500 mark for the first time this season
with a victory over Houston at Miller Park.
Gennett and Carter went yard for the second time this season while
Braun hit his first of the year, a two-run shot off Astros
right-hander Josh Fields in the eighth inning.
The Brewers' power helped bolster a stellar effort by Milwaukee's
pitching staff, which got five scoreless innings from right-hander
Chase Anderson to get things started.
Royals 4, Twins 3
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Salvador Perez tripled in the tying run and
scored two runs as Kansas City edged Minnesota.
Perez's triple off Kevin Jepsen scored Alex Gordon, who led off the
eighth with a single, to tie the score at 3. Omar Infante's
sacrifice fly scored Perez to put the Royals up.
Byung-Ho Park, who hit 105 home runs the past two years in Korea,
hit his first big league home run in the eighth to give the Twins a
short-lived 3-2 lead.
Diamondbacks 3, Cubs 2
PHOENIX -- Yasmany Tomas singled in the winning run with two outs in
the last of the ninth inning as Arizona handed the Chicago Cubs
their first defeat of the season, 3-2, at Chase Field on Friday
night.
Welington Castillo singled with one in the ninth inning off former
Arizona right-hander Trevor Cahill (0-1) and pinch-runner Chris
Owings took second on a groundout before Tomas singled over
shortstop.
Arizona (2-3) trailed 2-0 after six innings before tying the game on
RBI singles by Paul Goldschmidt in the sixth and eighth innings. The
Cubs (3-1) pitched to Goldschmidt with two outs and a runner on
third in the eighth.
Athletics 3, Mariners 2
SEATTLE -- Chris Coghlan hit a one-out, solo home run in the top of
the ninth inning to lift Oakland to a win over Seattle.
Coghlan hit a 1-2 pitch from new Seattle closer Steve Cishek over
the right-field fence to break a 2-2 tie. Oakland reliever Ryan
Madson earned his second save of the season after pitching a
scoreless bottom of the ninth.
Coghlan had two RBIs for Oakland. He drove in the A's first run with
an RBI single in the top of the fourth.
Rangers 7, Angels 3
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- A.J. Griffin pitched an efficient six innings to
earn his first victory in more than 2 1/2 years, helping Texas to a
win over Los Angeles at Angel Stadium.
Griffin last pitched on Sept. 24, 2013 for Oakland at Angel Stadium
before his career was derailed by injuries. He had Tommy John
surgery in April of 2014, then had to abort his comeback midway
through last season because of a shoulder strain.
Friday he was far from dominating but he didn't need to be. He gave
up three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out one and
making 87 pitches in six innings.
Giants 3, Dodgers 2 (10 innings)
SAN FRANCISCO -- Brandon Crawford led off the bottom of the 10th
inning with a home run, giving the San Francisco Giants a 3-2
victory over Los Angeles after Dodgers starting pitcher Ross
Stripling left in the eighth with a no-hitter.
Crawford's walk-off shot came on the second pitch thrown by Joe
Blanton (0-1), the Dodgers' fourth pitcher, and gave the Giants
(4-1) their ninth win in 11 games over their rivals dating to the
start of last season.
It was the second walk-off homer of Crawford's career.
