 April 11 (The Sports Xchange) - Oakland Athletics left-handed starting pitcher Felix Doubront will undergo Tommy John surgery on his throwing elbow Tuesday and miss the rest of the season.

An initial diagnosis of a torn ulnar collateral ligament was reaffirmed on Monday by an MRI confirming that Doubront, 28, would need to have surgery to reconstruct the ligament.

He won a spot in the rotation out of camp, but left his final exhibition start on April 2 after just one inning with tightness in his forearm. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list to start the season.

The Chicago Cubs acquired left-hander Giovanni Soto from the Cleveland Indians for a cash consideration.

Soto was then optioned to Triple-A Iowa. To make room for Soto on the 40-man roster, catcher Kyle Schwarber was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

Soto, 24, made his major league debut with the Indians last season and turned in six scoreless relief appearances over 3 1/3 innings.

The Braves were busy on Monday, moving players throughout the organization.

Right-handed pitcher Dan Winkler was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured right elbow. The Braves also designated right-hander Jose Ramirez for assignment and selected the contracts of righty Joel De La Cruz from Triple-A Gwinnett and lefty starter Hunter Cervenka from Double-A Mississippi.

Outfielder Mallex Smith was recalled from Gwinnett. Smith, was scheduled to make his big league debut as he batted leadoff and played center field.

The Chicago White Sox welcomed back outfielder Adam Eaton, who was reinstated from the paternity list before Monday's game.

Eaton had nine hits in 20 at-bats before being placed on paternity leave so he could attend the birth of his son on Sunday.

To make room for Eaton, the White Sox optioned right-hander Michael Ynoa to Double-A Birmingham.

Monday was a special Opening Day for David Ortiz at Boston.

First, he was honored by throwing out the first pitch. He was accompanied by Boston sports icons Bill Russell, Bobby Orr, and Ty Law.

The cherry on top was Ortiz's daughter, Alex, sang the national anthem. (Editing by Larry Fine) ))
