Ana Bogdan of Romania knocked off the former world No. 1 in
straight sets 6-2, 7-5 at Florianopolis, Brazil.
Jankovic appeared on her way to forcing a deciding third set by
taking a 5-4 lead in the second, but Bogdan rallied to win the
next three games to complete the upset of the former U.S. Open
finalist.
Ranked 139th in the world, Bogdan took advantage of five
double-faults by Jankovic, who won only 46 percent (13 of 28) of
her first-service points.
Bogdan also saved 13 of 18 break points to advance to a
quarterfinal matchup against Lyudmyla Kichenok of the Ukraine.
Kichenok needed three sets to outlast Tereza Martincov of
Czechoslovakia 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (1).
Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu was among six seeded players to
advance in straight sets.
Begu, the No. 2 seed and 31st-ranked player in the world,
breezed to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Brazil's Paula Cristina
Goncalves. She will face No. 7 seed Nao Hibino of Japan in the
next round.
Monica Puig of Puerto Rico, the third seed, also eased in the
quarterfinals with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Olga Savchuk. Up next
for Puig is eighth-seeded Naomi Osaka.
--Sixth-seeded American Vania King rolled to a first-round win
Tuesday in the Jiangxi Women's Tennis Open in Nanchang, China.
King defeated Australian qualifier Storm Sanders 6-4, 6-2.
Third-seeded Francesca Schiavone of Italy posted a lopsided 6-0,
6-4 victory over Chinese wild-card entrant Zhaoxuan Yang.
Croatia's Donna Vekic, the fourth seed, was knocked out by
Chinese wild card Jia-Jing Lu 5-7, 6-4, 7-5.
