Aug 5 (The Sports Xchange) - New York Yankees first baseman Mark
Teixeira announced his retirement Friday, effective at the end of
the season after a 14-year career.
The Yankees called a press conference at Yankee Stadium before their
series opener against the Cleveland Indians.
"After 14 years, it's time for me to do something else," Teixeira,
36, told reporters. "I got to live out my dream and had more success
than I could ever imagined.
"It wasn't always enough, but I tried my best. To have a World
Series ring with the Yankees is something I'll never forget."
Teixeira, a member of New York's 2009 championship team, is in the
final season of an eight-year, $180-million deal he signed with the
Yankees after the 2008 season.
A three-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove winner, Teixeira is a
.269 career hitter with 404 home runs, 1,836 hits and 1,281 RBIs
with the Texas Rangers, Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Angels and
Yankees.

Detroit Tigers right-hander Jordan Zimmermann received positive
results from his MRI exam and may avoid going back on the disabled
list.
The MRI test on Zimmermann's right lat muscle came back clean,
according to the Detroit Free Press. He is scheduled to throw a
bullpen session Sunday.
Zimmermann (9-5) was rocked on Thursday against by the Chicago White
Sox in his first start since coming off the 15-day disabled list. He
allowed six runs on six hits in 1 2/3 innings, his shortest outing
this season, in the 6-3 loss.
Zimmermann had been on the DL with a right neck strain since July 4
and hadn't pitched in the majors since June 30.

St. Louis
Cardinals All-Star infielder Matt Carpenter was activated prior to
Friday's game against the Atlanta Braves, the team announced.
Carpenter had been on the disabled list since July 7 because right
oblique injury. He missed 24 games and appeared in four games with
Double-A Springfield during an injury rehabilitation.
To make room on the roster for Carpenter, the Cardinals optioned
left-handed pitcher Dean Kiekhefer to Triple-A Memphis.

Outfielder Andrew McCutchen returned to the Pittsburgh Pirates
lineup after being benched for all three games of the Atlanta series
that ended Thursday. Manager Clint Hurdle's hope was that it would
serve as a reset for McCutchen, who entered Friday's game hitting
