First-place New York City (10-7-7) added a point to its lead
in Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference standings with 37
points. San Jose (6-6-10) also picked up a point but remained in
eighth place in the Western Conference.
Both clubs had opportunities to score in the opening half, but
neither could convert. Fatai Alashe, Alberto Quintero and Anibal
Godoy all put shots on goal over the first 25 minutes, but New
York City goalkeeper Josh Saunders could not be beaten.
Frank Lampard had a chance to put New York City on the board in
the 31st minute, but his shot from a different angle was saved
by San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham. Lampard had the first hat
trick in team history last weekend when he scored three goals
against the Colorado Rapids at Yankee Stadium.
There were even more opportunities in the second half, but still
neither team could score. One of New York City's best chances
came in the 81st minute when Steven Mendoza took aim from the
center of the box, but Bingham stopped it in the bottom left
corner.
