Fifty-eight was a number that
only existed in golf folklore until Sunday. Then Jim Furyk made it a
reality.
The 46-year-old Furyk turned an eagle, 10 birdies and seven pars
into a PGA Tour-record 12-under-par 58 in Sunday's final round of
the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn.
"Just cool," an admittedly stunned and flabbergasted Furyk said.
"It's kind of a reminder no matter how bad you feel with your swing
you're never that far away."
The magic began when Furyk holed out for eagle on the 419-yard,
par-4 No. 3 hole after a birdie the hole before. His opening-nine
score of 8-under 27 set a Travelers record.
On the back nine, Furyk opened with three consecutive birdies to
complete his string of seven straight, the longest streak on the PGA
Tour this season. His birdie on No. 16 dropped him to the historic
58 number with pars on the last two holes.
Furyk was the last of six players in PGA Tour history who had come
closest to the number, carding a 59 in the third round of the 2013
BMW Championship at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill.
TENNIS
Australian Nick Kyrgios recorded his second career title when he
fought off top-seeded John Isner 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4) in the
championship match of the Atlanta Open.
The second-seeded Kyrgios ended Isner's 15-match winning streak in
Atlanta. Isner had won the event each of the past three years.
Isner struggled with his fitness -- and his legs -- in the humid
conditions. The 31-year-old American was outplayed in both tiebreaks
by the 21-year-old Kyrgios.
Isner missed an early opportunity to create distance when he won the
opening game and went up 40-0 in the second. But Kyrgios rallied to
force deuce and eventually won the game.

Wide receiver Carlos Strickland III announced on Twitter that he is
transferring from Cal to be closer to his ailing grandfather in
Dallas.

"I am very thankful for the opportunity I've had at UC Berkeley and
will never forget the memories I've shared with my peers,"
Strickland wrote Saturday. "Thank you to everyone who has supported
me throughout my time at Cal. I wish the program the best this
season and in the years to come."
Strickland was a four-star recruit coming out of Skyline High School
in Dallas, and spent last season on the scout team. He was expected
to compete for a starting spot this year with the Bears losing their
top six receivers from 2015.
AUTO RACING
Erik Jones and Furniture Row Racing made it official at Watkins Glen
International.
In 2017, Furniture Row Racing will expand from one car to two, with
Jones driving the No. 77 Toyota under sponsorship from 5-hour
Energy.
The addition of Jones brings to six the number of full-time NASCAR
Sprint Cup Series teams receiving comprehensive factory support from
Toyota Racing Development. A native of Byron, Mich., Jones, 20, will
team with veteran Martin Truex Jr., who qualified for the Chase for
the NASCAR Sprint Cup last year and reached the Championship 4 in
the No. 78 Furniture Row Camry.
Jones' only Sprint Cup experience consists of three races last
season in a fill-in role for Kyle Busch, who missed the first 11
events because of injury. Jones' best finish was a 12th at Texas
Motor Speedway, and the speed he showed as a relief driver is a
source of confidence as he ascends to the Sprint Cup series.
