[August 11, 2016]  Aug 10 (The Sports Xchange) - Outfielder Carlos Gomez, who was an All-Star in 2013 and 2014, was designated for assignment by the Houston Astros, the team announced Wednesday.

Gomez hit .284 with 24 homers in 2014 for the Milwaukee Brewers. He was acquired by Houston at the trade deadline last season, and finished the 2015 season hitting .255 with 12 homers for the two teams combined.

This season, however, Gomez is hitting just .210 with five homers and 29 RBIs in 85 games.

Washington Nationals right fielder Bryce Harper was held out of the starting lineup for the third straight game due to neck stiffness.

Harper left Saturday's contest against San Francisco in the seventh inning and was expected to be a bystander when the Nationals closed out their brief two-game series with the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday.

Chicago Cubs right-handed pitching prospect Luiz Escanio received a 144-game suspension for violating the minor league's drug prevention and treatment program.

The Minnesota Twins placed Trevor May on the disabled list with a strained lower back and recalled fellow right-hander J.T. Chargois from Triple-A Rochester.

Back spasms have been a constant issue for May, who missed 23 games with the injury earlier this season.

The Seattle Mariners optioned outfielder Guillermo Heredia to Triple-A Tacoma following Tuesday night's game.

Heredia, 25, has hit .250 with one home run and three RBIs in 12 games with the Mariners this season.

The New York Yankees optioned right-handed pitcher Luis Severino to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and added right-handed pitcher Blake Parker to their active roster, the team announced.

Severino returned to the Yankees starting rotation this week after working out of the bullpen, but on Tuesday, in his first start since May 13, Severino lasted only 4 1/3 innings, giving up seven hits and five earned runs.

For the season, Severino is 1-7 with a 6.42 earned-run average.

Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton was not in the lineup because of a sore hip, although manager Don Mattingly said this had already been scheduled as a rest day.

The Philadelphia Phillies recalled left-handed pitcher Elvis Araujo from Triple-A Lehigh Valley after placing right-hander Zach Eflin on the disabled list Tuesday.

Los Angeles Angels pitcher Rich Hill will not make his team debut Friday night because his blisters have not healed. Ross Stripling will start in Hill's place.

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista was out of the lineup Wednesday after tweaking his knee when he tripped in right field on Tuesday. He had an MRI and there was a possibility of a stint on the disabled list.

Toronto recalled right-handed pitcher Ryan Tepera from Triple-A Buffalo to replace right-hander Danny Barnes, who was returned to the Triple-A club after the game Tuesday.

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Matt Adams (left shoulder inflammation) was scratched from the lineup because of left shoulder inflammation and replaced by Jhonny Peralta.

The Cardinals announced they will call up right-hander Luke Weaver from Triple-A Memphis to start Saturday at the Chicago Cubs in place of disabled right-hander Michael Wacha (right shoulder inflammation). (Editing by Andrew Both)
