[August 15, 2016]  Aug 14 (The Sports Xchange) - Miami Marlins star Giancarlo Stanton will miss the remainder of the season with a left groin injury suffered during Saturday's loss to the Chicago White Sox.

Stanton was placed on the 15-day disabled list prior to Sunday's game and an MRI exam revealed that the injury was serious. Manager Don Mattingly said after the contest that Stanton was done for the season.

"The best-case scenario is a six-week return," Marlins general manager Michael Hill said after Sunday's game. "There's still an opportunity to get (Stanton) back before the end of the season, but it was a significant injury."

Stanton suffered the injury on an awkward slide in the ninth inning of Saturday's loss to the White Sox. The right fielder attempted to stretch a single into a double and was tagged out to end the game.

Stanton belted his 25th homer of the season in the contest and had three hits and three RBIs. The winner of the All-Star Game's Home Run Derby last month is batting .244 with 70 RBIs after overcoming a slow start.

Miami also placed left-hander Adam Conley (finger tendinitis on his pitching hand) on the DL. He is 8-6 with a 3.94 ERA in 24 starts this season.

Washington Nationals right fielder Bryce Harper returned to the starting lineup Sunday after a five-game absence due to a neck injury.

Washington's originally posted lineup didn't include the reigning National League MVP. But the Nationals later turned in a revised lineup that listed Harper batting third in the series finale against the Atlanta Braves.

New York Yankees right-hander Luis Severino was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre shortly after allowing seven runs on eight hits in 3 1/3 innings in Sunday's 12-3 rout by Tampa Bay.

The 22-year-old Dominican had been recalled from the Triple-A club on Friday in the wake of fellow hurler Nathan Eovaldi being placed on the disabled list.

Severino limped to a 1-8 mark with a 7.19 ERA this season with the Yankees.

New York Mets shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera (strained left patella tendon) is expected to begin a rehab assignment this week and could return during the four-game series against the San Francisco Giants that begins on Thursday.

Cincinnati Reds center fielder Billy Hamilton was back in the starting lineup Sunday despite being pulled early on Saturday when he jammed his left hand.

Hamilton began the day leading the league with 51 stolen bases, three ahead of Milwaukee's Jonathan Villar. (Editing by Larry Fine) ))
