Obituary
Duane Smalley, 86, went home to be with the Lord,
10:30 a.m. on Sunday December 18, 2016 at Abraham
Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Lincoln.
Duane was born July 11, 1930 in New Holland, son of
Clifford and Evalena Smalley. He married Marjory
Ryan on November 8, 1949 in Paducah, KY. They
celebrated 67 years of faithful marriage last month.
Surviving Duane are his wife, one son Daniel (Heidi)
Smalley of Cumming, GA, one sister Jean Beyer of
Lincoln, and three grandchildren: Luke, Ben, and
Libby, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded
in death by his parents, two brothers, and five
sisters.
He spent two years during high school in Haiti, Mo
assisting his older brother, Francis, work a family
cotton farm.
Duane had a variety of employers in Lincoln
throughout his life including Gullett’s Greenhouse,
Stetson’s China Factory, Cutler-Hammer, and Lincoln
Developmental Center. He also worked for LPJ Metal
Fab, an aeronautical tool and die shop in Gardenia,
CA from 1953 to 1965. After retiring from L.D.C.,
Duane could often be seen taking his daily walks
around Lincoln or enjoying time visiting with family
and friends. |
He enjoyed many pastimes during his life including
coaching youth sports teams, bowling, golfing, and
viewing harness races at the State and local fairs.
Also, he was happy to live long enough to see the
Cubs win the World Series.
A celebration of life for Duane will be at 11:00
a.m. Thursday December 22, 2016 at Lincoln Christian
Church with Ron Otto and Ryan Edgecombe officiating.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
prior to the service also at the church. Burial will
be held at a later date.
Memorials may be given in remembrance of Duane to
The Oasis Senior Center of Lincoln, and Lincoln
Christian Church Jolly Seniors.
Services are entrusted to Fricke-Calvert-Schrader
Funeral Home in Lincoln.
